Chapter 162
Chapter 162
He didn’t know how to handle it, or even what the right choice was.
Zack had never seen Marcus so conflicted. He let out a quiet sigh.
“Marcus, you really should talk to Sophie. Clear the air with her.”
Liam was still badly injured, and after downing several bottles of liquor, his whole body swayed.
He drained the last of his glass and stumbled toward the door.
Ring, ring, ring.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. Liam pressed answer.
“Liam, a few men just showed up saying they were taking me to the hospital for an abortion. Did you send them?” Lena’s voice was choked with tears.
A wave of irritation surged through Liam. “I told you, this baby came at the wrong time. After the procedure, I’ll have you sent abroad. You’ll get a million a month. You can start a new life overseas.”
“No! I don’t want that! You can’t do this to me!” Lena sobbed so hard she could barely breathe.
“Lena, stop making a scene!” Liam’s voice dropped into a growl. “This child cannot be born. Even if you run this time, I have a thousand ways to drag you back!”
“Quit crying. If I hadn’t been fooled by that pitiful act of yours, things between me and Sophie would never have ended up like this!”
Her sobs stopped. “So you really mean to destroy me completely?”
“My mind’s made up. Go with them into the operating room.”
He hung up without another word and staggered toward his car.
Fueled by anger, he floored the gas the moment he got behind the wheel.
Cold wind blasted through the open window, easing his rage for a moment–until he realized something was wrong.
The brakes weren’t working.
Outside Nightfall Bar, Lena held her stomach with one hand and slid the phone back into her pocket with the other.
She wiped away her tears, a twisted smile spreading across her face as she watched the car spin out of control.
Liam, don’t blame me.
Boom!
Sparks exploded not far away. Sophie instinctively stepped back several paces.
A car had just slammed into the guardrail, flames shooting into the night sky.
Dozens of people from the bar rushed out to watch. Their words-“He’s probably done for“-carried not even a trace of pity.

Chapter 162
Sophie grabbed a fire extinguisher and started toward the wreck, when a firm hand gripped her wrist.
“Don’t forget you’re pregnant.”
Marcus’s deep voice pulled her up short. Sophie tightened her hold on the extinguisher.
“So the great Mr. Morgan finally shows himself.”
“Let’s talk.”
Marcus led her back into Nightfall Bar, to his private booth. Zack and Chris froze for a beat, then quickly slipped out.
Marcus took the main seat on the sofa. “What did you come here to ask?”
Sophie sat opposite him. The deleted post flashed in her mind. More than why Marcus had suddenly disappeared, she wanted to know who that woman in the photo was.
She lifted her gaze sharply to his.
“Why did you suddenly gift the land in West City to my family? And after that, why did you suddenly vanish without a word?”
Marcus’s eyes darkened. “That’s all you came to ask?”
Her fingers clenched against her knees. “Yes. That’s all.”
She had no right to ask about the woman in the photo.
Marcus said nothing, only stared into her eyes. He wanted to see through her, but no matter how hard he tried, she gave him nothing.
At last, he let out a bitter smile.
“I had no use for the land. Your family needed it, so I let it go as a favor. As for disappearing–I didn’t, I’ve been abroad negotiating contracts. Busy, no
time to answer calls.”
“Was it because of your grandfather?” Sophie cut in. “He pressured you, didn’t he? You threw out that West City property just to distract me. Your relationship with him wasn’t this bad before. Why is it suddenly falling apart? Was it…because of me?”
Marcus looked away, voice deliberately casual. “You’re overthinking.”
Sophie stepped closer, leaning down to meet his eyes.
“Marcus, tell me the truth.”
He gave a short, mocking laugh, eyes glinting with danger.
“Then don’t lie to me. You show up at Nightfall Bar in the middle of the night–was it really just to ask me that?”
Her lips pressed tight. She didn’t answer.
“The photo was Zack’s doing. He edited it to test if you’d get jealous. When I found out, I made him delete it. I didn’t expect you’d still come.”
His gaze burned into her. “So why did you really come, Sophie?”
Her heart thudded under that piercing stare. He hadn’t lifted a finger, yet his presence alone pressed down on her like a weight.
Those eyes could see through everything. But he wanted to hear the answer from her own lips.
He wanted her to surrender. To bow her head.

Chapter 162
But Sophie refused.
“Whatever reason you think, that’s what it is.”
She broke his gaze and stood.
“It’s late. I’m going home.”
“I’ll have someone drive you.”
“No need. You should be the one to head home early.”
She waved him off and strode out of Nightfall Bar.
Only when she slid into her car did her racing heartbeat finally begin to calm. Facing Marcus was never easy.
Ring, ring, ring.
Her phone buzzed–it was Sherry Shaw.
“I found Marcus’s booth number. Don’t go in alone, the bar’s too chaotic. Wait for me–I’ll come join you.”
Sophie’s lips curved slightly. “No need. I’ve already seen him. I’m heading home now, so don’t bother coming. Get some rest.”
Sherry’s voice was urgent. “What happened? Why did you go to Nightfall Bar in the middle of the night to see Marcus?”
“I’ll tell you later. I’m too tired now–I need to rest.”
“All right. Just drive safe. I heard there was a crash not far from the bar–probably some drunk idiot asking for it.”
