Chapter 163
“They’ve already blocked off that stretch of road. You’ll need to take a detour.”
Sophie frowned slightly. “Why block the road? Was the crash that serious?”
“Not sure of the details yet, but it’s definitely something stirred up by people in our circle. Otherwise Uncle Matt wouldn’t have sealed it off in the middle of the night.”
“They probably want to keep the cause quiet–must be ugly, so they rushed to cover it up before it turns into a scandal.”
“Whatever. Not our business. I’m hanging up–I’ve got to drive.”
Sophie ended the call. When she got back to the Chandler estate, she went straight to bed.
The next morning, the shrill buzz of her phone woke her.
It was an unfamiliar number–she hung up.
But the ringing came again. Annoyed, she answered.
“Who the hell is this? It’s six a.m.–why are you calling me?”
“You shameless little tramp, how can you still be sleeping!”
The sharp voice of Irene Morgan cut through the line, snapping Sophie fully awake.
“My son got into a car accident because of you. He just came out of surgery and kept calling your name. And you–you heartless bitch–you’re still sleeping soundly!”
“Aren’t you afraid the ghosts of the dead will come for you in your dreams?”
Sophie’s brow furrowed. “Spewing filth first thing in the morning–are you sick?”
“Liam’s car crash has nothing to do with me. If you’re unwell, have the doctor check your head while you’re there. Stop disturbing my sleep.”
She moved to hang up, but Irene’s screeching only grew louder.
“I’m telling you, you will come to the hospital right now to see my son, or else-”
“Or else what?” Sophie cut her off. “Have you forgotten? Liam and I are finished. You have no right to order me around.”
“You have half an hour,” Irene spat. “If you don’t show up, I’ll make sure everyone knows you got pregnant out of wedlock with some bastard child!”
“What did you just say?” Sophie’s voice turned ice cold, her grip on the phone tightening until her knuckles whitened,
“You didn’t know? Liam already told me. Some other man knocked you up. Don’t think breaking the engagement frees you from us. As long as my son wants to marry you, you’re responsible for him!”
“By seven, you’d better be here. Or prepare for your reputation to be destroyed!”
The call ended. Rage simmered in Sophie’s eyes.
She had overestimated just how low Liam could sink.

Chapter 163
At the stroke of seven, she pushed open the hospital room door.
Irene rushed at her immediately. “You really cut it close. I thought you’d be too scared to come.”
Sophie’s eyes hardened, her voice like steel. “Call me a tramp one more time, and I’ll make sure you never speak again.”
“You wouldn’t dare!” Irene’s voice shook. “My son went drinking at Nightfall Bar for you, then crashed his car. The doctors say he’s half–paralyzed–he’ll spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. And worse-”
Her voice cracked into sobs. “Because of you, he’ll never have children. He’s ruined! And here you are, standing proud, threatening me? Sophie, you should be ashamed!”
Sophie ignored her and glanced at the man lying on the bed.
Liam’s head and arm were wrapped in thick bandages. He stared blankly ahead, his eyes empty of life.
So he had been the one in that crash outside the bar last night.
And yes, it had left him broken. But what did that have to do with her?
“My son kept calling your name while unconscious,” Irene said, wiping her tears. “I used to think you weren’t good enough for him. But after so many years, there must be something between you two. I’ve decided—I won’t stand in your way anymore. Stay by his side, be a good wife, and I’ll forget the past.”
“How convenient,” Sophie cut in coldly. “When he was whole, you thought I wasn’t worthy. Now he’s crippled, sterile, and suddenly I’m supposed to marry him?”
“Irene, I never knew you could scheme this well.”
Her words made Irene flush with shame and rage.
“I’m still your elder! Is this how the Chandler family raised you to speak?”
Sophie let out a sharp laugh. “Elder? You don’t deserve the title.”
“You-”
“Enough!”
Liam’s bloodshot eyes snapped open, his voice hoarse with fury.
“Mom, get out. I need to talk to her alone.”
“But Liam, you’re still recovering. She’ll only upset you-”
“Mom.” His tone was glacial. “I said leave.”
He had never spoken to her so coldly, Startled, Irene retreated out of the room.
