Chapter 206
The old man’s face darkened as he cut the reporter off.
“From this day forward, remember this there is only one Mr. Morgan in Riverland. I don’t want to hear anyone else claim the title again.
The reporters realized they’d crossed a line and quickly shifted their questions.
Marcus and Sophie sat quietly at a distance, watching the circus unfold.
Sophie nudged his arm. “We’re just going to sit here like this?”
“Did you hear what that reporter just called you?”
Marcus’s lips curled into a sly smile, his sharp eyes narrowing.
“What did he say?” Sophie asked, confused.
He leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear as he whispered the final two words.
“My lover.”
Sophie’s head went blank. Heat flooded her cheeks until her face burned scarlet.
Marcus chuckled, unable to resist. “Well, Sophie, you’re blushing.”
“Shut up!” she snapped, flustered and furious.
“Cute when you’re angry,” Marcus murmured before turning his gaze back toward Gideon.
Sophie followed his line of sight, her brows furrowing.
“Not that I’m biased toward you, but the old man’s pick this time really is pathetic. There’s no way I believe he’s the one who secured Hills Corporation.”
Marcus’s smirk deepened. “Sometimes what you see isn’t what’s real.”
“What do you mean?”
“Some people look harmless, even weak. But maybe they’re the ones hiding the sharpest claws.”
Realization dawned across Sophie’s face, her eyes widening.
“You’re saying Gideon’s playing dumb? That it’s all an act?”
Marcus finally looked at her, his voice even. “If he were truly capable, he wouldn’t be standing here as a puppet.”
Sophie’s thoughts spun. If Gideon really was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, then Marcus’s battles ahead would only get harder.
“Enough. The show’s over. Let’s go.”
Marcus rose to his feet, extending his hand. Sophie didn’t hesitate this time, slipping her fingers into his. Together, they walked out.

“Sophie, Marcus is finished. If you stay with him, you’ll just suffer with him. Come back to me, I’ll take you abroad. We can love in pews?
Sophie folded her arms, her gaze sharp.
“Marcus Blake, wake up. The CEO of Morgan Group now is Gideon, not you. You schemed, you clawed, you ruined everything–and in the end, Gideon reaped the reward. Isn’t that pathetic?”
A black Maybach pulled up. Sophie yanked the door open, slid inside, and left him choking on exhaust fumes.
Marcus Blake clenched the arms of his wheelchair, veins bulging. His glare swept from the disappearing Maybach back to the press hall.
If the old man wouldn’t give him the position, then he’d seize it himself. He had sacrificed too much to watch Gideon take it all. And Sophie–the was meant to be his.
Inside the Maybach, Marcus kept his face unreadable as he drove, Casually, he asked,
“What did Marcus Blake say to you just now?”
“Nothing special. Just the usual–trying to talk me into going back to him,” Sophie answered lightly, as if it were nothing.
Marcus’s jaw tightened, his expression darkening. He suddenly pulled over to the curb.
“Why are you stopping?” Sophie asked in surprise.
“Because that bastard still hasn’t given up on you.” His voice was low, tight, edged with fury.
Sophie couldn’t help but laugh, though she quickly straightened her face. “Yeah, looks like his obsession’s still alive and well. What now? Planning to send your secretary to rough him up again?”
A flicker of guilt crossed Marcus’s eyes before he masked it.
“He told you?”
