Chapter 240
“The results are int
The door to the consultation 100m suddenly opened, and Zack hurried in. But when he saw the intimate scene between them, he immediately stopped in his tracks, his cheeks turning red as he quickly turned away.
His breath became more hurried, his voice trembling. “I… I think I might have come at the wrong time.”
Marcus gave Zack a cold, piercing look, before gently holding Sophie’s hand and standing up.
“How is the situation? The baby…?” Sophie asked, her hands instinctively resting on her belly,
Zack finally turned around, forcing a nervous smile, and gestured for them to come inside the room.
On the wall was a projection of the gene screening results Zack had done on the samples. He removed his mask, his expression serious. “I’ve run all the tests for abnormalities, and all the markers are normal, which means there are no deformities in the baby.”
As he spoke, the heavy weight on Sophie and Marcus’s hearts seemed to lift. The two of them tightly gripped each other’s hands and exchanged a relieved look.
Zack sighed and rolled his eyes. “Hey, hey, hey, I’m not done yet…”
Marcus shot him a sharp glance, and Zack immediately softened, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Because of the previous abnormal tests, I also checked further.”
“When the first sample was taken, someone injected a foreign sample into the body.” Zack fiddled with his device and switched to the next page of the projection.
He compared the three tests, pointing to a specific marker. “This one had an unusually high concentration in the first test, a little lower in the second, and now it’s almost nonexistent.”
Sophie furrowed her brows, her thoughts racing. Could it have been Director Sterling?
The first time they found an abnormality was when Sophie went for a solo check–up. Sophie glanced at Marcus.
O
His eyes had already turned cold, and without hesitation, he made a call. “Get the records of all the nurses and doctors who were involved in Sophie’s check–up, and check their recent bank transactions.”
Sophie anxiously looked at her belly, then raised her gaze to ask, “Could the injection of that substance affect the baby?”

Zack gave her a calm smile, gently reassuring her. “Don’t worry, the baby’s markers are all normal, and any of those substances have already been metabolized.”
His words acted like a sedative, and Sophie let out a deep breath, her anxiety easing.
The baby was healthy, and Sophie’s previous concerns dissipated.
The two of them left Zack’s office, feeling a sense of relief.
The dark cloud that had been hanging over Sophie’s heart lifted, and she looked down at her belly, a motherly smile appearing on her face.
Marcus’s eyes froze, and he instinctively pulled Sophie into his arms, then gently cupped her chin, speaking softly, “Are you interested in going to the apartment you got me?”
A flicker of light appeared in Sophie’s eyes. Before they left for Falyon, he had invited her, but the timing hadn’t worked out. Now that everything had been settled, she could go see it.
Sophie’s almond–shaped eyes curved into a smile. “Sure.”

Marcus opened the car door for Sophie, then, as he walked around the car, he sent a message: ‘It’s time to start.
Inside the consultation room, just as Zack was about to take a break, he saw the message pop up in his group chat. He jumped up in shock. “Damn h completely forgot about this important task!”
He quickly took off his white coat and made a call. “Guys, we need immediate help!”
On the car ride, due to pregnancy hormones, Sophie started to feel drowsy. Without thinking, she naturally rested her head on Marcus’s arm and fell into a deep sleep.
Marcus, who regularly worked out, had broad shoulders that made her feel safe, and his well–defined shoulder muscles were incredibly comfortable to lean against.
He glanced down at Sophie, a gentle smile curling on his lips, a rare softness in his demeanor. For a moment, he felt the warmth of home.
Home…
Having grown up in the Morgan family, where every action was governed by strict rules and guidelines, Marcus was always surrounded by tension. But now, with Sophie by his side, she was like the sun, melting the icy barrier he had built around himself.
The car drove smoothly, and Sophie didn’t wake up.
At some point, Sophie stirred and rubbed her sleepy eyes. Her gaze fell on Marcus’s slightly anxious eyes.
Marcus was the best at hiding his emotions. As a man who held immense power over life and death in the business world, he had never known what it was like to feel nervous, so naturally, he wouldn’t hide such emotions.
Sophie was momentarily taken aback and then let out a soft laugh. “Why are you so nervous?”
Marcus cleared his throat and averted his gaze, trying to hide his unease.
Sophie suddenly leaned closer to him, teasing him with a playful smile. “Don’t tell me you messed up the decoration of my apartment, and that’s why you’re so nervous?”
Faced with Sophie’s tempting face, Marcus didn’t know how to respond. He stopped trying to cover up his feelings and turned away, opening the car
door to step out.
He took Sophie’s hand and entered the building. Chris, understanding the situation, wisely stayed behind.
Marcus held Sophie’s hand with one hand while the other was in his pocket.
The numbers on the elevator’s digital screen kept changing, and his heartbeat quickened. He even started to sweat.
Ding~
The elevator finally stopped. Marcus fixed his gaze and led Sophie out.
This building had one apartment per floor, and there was still a hallway to walk down before reaching the main door.
However, it was completely dark now. Sophie furrowed her brow. “What’s going on? Did the power go out because the electricity bill hasn’t been paid for too long?”
