Nathan fell silent at once.
After all, Marcus’s methods were notorious–even back when Nathan was still in France. He had no desire to test them.
He forced a dry laugh, scratching the back of his neck.
“Of course, Manager Chandler. I’ll head out now.”
Gathering his scattered papers, he ducked his head and retreated hastily from Sophie’s office.
Left alone, Sophie leaned back in her chair, lifting her hand like a victor, flashing the wedding band on her finger toward the security camera.
Watching from his office, Marcus chuckled under his breath. His own thumb brushed over his wedding ring, as though caressing her hand across the distance.
Standing nearby, Chris cleared his throat.
“Mr. Morgan, if you really dislike young Master Cole, I can arrange for him to be transferred to another department.”
Marcus shut off the monitor, rubbing the bridge of his nose with a wry smile.
“No. The old man clearly sent him here for me to grind into shape. He’s using me as the whetstone. Clever.”
Those Marcus personally trained always turned into top players.
Chris himself was proof–fluent in multiple languages, a computer expert, sharp in business politics and market strategy. Even in the stock market, he could crash a company’s value within hours with Marcus’s say–so.
And Nathan? If he survived Marcus’s temper and earned even a word of praise, that alone would be fortune enough.
Marcus exhaled heavily.
“Forget it. The old man was once my benefactor. Consider this repaying the debt.”
Chris simply nodded.
“Sir, Australia has shown interest in a partnership. Should I-”
“Run the assessments. Handle it,” Marcus cut him off.
Chris inclined his head, but his phone buzzed before he could continue. He checked it and looked up.
“Sir, Ms. Morris is here.”
Marcus’s eyes flickered.
“Meeting room. Now.”
Though he’d claimed he needed time to consider, Marcus had already made up his mind. Partnering with Nancy Morris meant nothing but profit.
Half an hour later, contracts were signed, hands were shaken.
“Mr. Morgan, a pleasure,” Nancy said, her gaze sharp with ambition.
“Likewise,” Marcus replied, lips curving faintly.
But just as she turned to leave, Nancy hesitated.

“There’s something I must ask… Do you know Viola?”
Marcus’s pen froze mid–click. His expression darkened, eyes cold.
“No.”
Nancy studied his face but found no crack in his refusal. She finally nodded, convincing herself she must have been mistaken, and left with the contract in hand.
Alone, Marcus’s unease only deepened. He couldn’t afford any wild card to throw his plans into chaos.
“Look into Viola,” he ordered crisply.
Chris stepped forward.
“Sir, I was about to tell you. Viola Group is a U.S.–based cosmetics company. But the founder’s identity is… sealed. Just like yours was, back in the beginning.”
Marcus let out a cold laugh.
“So someone’s playing my old game against me. Interesting.”
“Keep digging. There’s always a trail.” He checked his watch, then strode out of his office.
By the time the workday wound down, the design department was restless. The only one still glued to his desk was Nathan.
Vivian glanced over, sighing softly.
“Nathan, you don’t have to push so hard. Inspiration can’t be forced.”
He lowered his eyes, shoulders hunched.
“Please don’t comfort me, Vivian. I have to prove I’m not useless. I need Manager Chandler to see that.”
Vivian’s chest tightened with sympathy.

“Manager Chandler is usually very kind. I’m not sure why she-“Her gaze darted toward Sophie’s office, uneasy.
Nathan sighed.
“Maybe she just has higher expectations for me. It’s fine. I’ll work harder.”
Before she could answer, the sound of footsteps drew every eye to the elevator
Marcus, immaculate in his suit, strode straight toward Sophie’s office.
The design team buzzed with suppressed excitement.
“Wait–did the boss just come to pick her up personally?”
“No way! Are we witnessing this live?!”
“Front row seats to the drama–dream come true!”
Their group chat exploded with gossip.
Inside, Sophie frowned at the noise, checking her phone. But before she could type a word, the door swung open.
“Manager Chandler. Time to clock out,” Marcus said, his voice low and commanding, snapping her out of her focus.
She blinked at him, startled.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered, conscious of the dozens of eyes outside.
Marcus only smirked, slipping his hand around hers.
“Picking up my wife. Is there a problem with that?”
He snagged her bag with his other hand, leading her toward the door.
As they passed, his cold gaze swept over Nathan’s desk–part warning, part dismissal.
“If you’ve nothing pressing, you can all head home,” Marcus announced.
Once the couple disappeared into the elevator, the design department erupted
“I knew it! I’ve shipped them forever!”
“Same here, but seeing it in person hits different. Marcus is usually so low–key. Why go public today?”
“Come on–it’s obvious. Our Manager is too brilliant. He must’ve felt a little threatened.”
The chatter grew louder, but Nathan sat silently at his desk, fists clenched until the elevator doors finally slid shut.
Only then did he loosen his grip, glancing at the proposal beside him. His lips twisted into a cold smile.
“Marriage or not… that just means I only have one rival left.”
