Chapter 270
“In that Nathan kid… he seems awfully attentive to you.”
Inside the car, Marcus’s jealousy had already boiled over. Ilis eyes cut toward sophie, brows furrowed.
“Not just attentive,” Sophie teased lightly, oblivious to the storm brewing in his gaze. “Very attentive. That little-”
She didn’t finish. Marcus caught her chin and crushed his lips against hers.
The kiss was fierce, his tongue tracing the edge of her lips until she gasped for air. Finally, he released her, though his brows remained knitted.
“Don’t call him your little brother.”
Sophie exhaled, cheeks flushed, chest heaving. She could only look at him helplessly, half–amused, half–out of breath.
Back home, the conversation resumed.
Marcus lounged on the sofa, legs crossed, his sharp gaze never leaving her.
“You know what happened today. If we talk business–Nathan’s got strong potential. He’s won international awards. With him, I believe Hills’s sales next quarter could more than double.”
For any company, doubling monthly revenue was a near impossibility. For Sophie, it was confidence. She knew domestic sales weren’t the limit–global markets waited.
But Marcus’s eyes grew darker, his thoughts clearly elsewhere. Before she could say more, he seized her hands, pinning them above her head as he leaned down–only for her rounded belly to stop him short.
Sophie smirked, tapping her stomach.
“She doesn’t approve.”

Marcus groaned inwardly. Dr. Mason had warned them already–too much passion might strain her body. He forced himself to pull back, though frustration clouded his eyes.

His gaze dropped to her belly, then flicked back up to her face.
“Your face isn’t fuller, your body hasn’t gained weight, but why does your stomach look… bigger?”

Sophie’s expression shifted. She looked down at her stomach, realizing she had felt oddly heavy and tired these past few days.
“Maybe the baby just eats more,” she said with a small smile, brushing it off.
Marcus stayed thoughtful, glancing toward the kitchen where her carefully prepared meals waited.
That night, Sophie still felt drained. By morning, the dull ache in her belly had worsened. She leaned against the bed, voice faint.
“Marcus…”
He appeared instantly.
“What is it?”
“My stomach… it hurts.” Her breathing quickened in alarm.
Marcus didn’t hesitate. He scooped her up and raced out. Within fifteen minutes, they were at the hospital.
Zack arrived bleary–eyed, lab coat thrown on, clearly dragged straight from bed. He scanned the results, then exhaled in relief.

“Nothing serious. The baby’s developing fast–your body’s just struggling to keep pace. Completely normal. Just stay relaxed ther
Sophie let out a long breath, comforted.
Zack, however, was barely holding consciousness. “My brother just flew abroad… finally no one to babysit me. And you two drag me out today. Cruel, absolutely cruel…”
Sophie blinked.
“Ryan went overseas?”
Zack rubbed his eyes, nodding sluggishly.
“Yeah. Stateside. Some huge case. Won’t be back soon…” His words slurred as he passed out in the chair.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. He said nothing, but gears were already turning in his head.
The next morning, Marcus insisted Sophie rest at home. But he himself couldn’t sit still. In his study, he pulled up his encrypted overseas email account–his contact with the U.S. royal court.
Bored, Sophie padded in quietly, only to freeze at his screen.
“You’re writing… a recommendation letter? For the U.S. royal court?”
Marcus leaned back, patting his thigh for her to sit. When she did, his lips curved smugly. He even magnified the draft email for her to see.
“Yes. Recommending Ryan Mason for a legal advisor role with the U.S. royals.”
Sophie’s brows shot up. Marcus, recommending someone else? That wasn’t like him.
She turned, meeting his eyes. And suddenly, she understood. Her lips twitched
“You’re trying to keep Ryan in the States.”

Marcus didn’t even bother to deny it. He smiled slyly.
“A man like him deserves Higher ground. Staying in Riverland is wasting his talent.”
Sophie almost laughed aloud. Only Marcus could dress up jealousy as selfless magnanimity.
He pulled her into his arms, burying his face against her neck. His voice dropped, suddenly serious.
“Sophie.”
She stiffened at his tone.
“What is it?”
He lifted his head, his eyes searching hers, not with superiority–but with raw vulnerable need.
“What are you to me?”
The answer slipped out before she thought.
“Your wife.”
Her face heated at once. “Why are you even asking that?”
Marcus clasped her hand tightly, pressing their wedding bands together. His grip on her tightened.
“Sophie… you’re the love of my life. Always. Nothing can change that.”

He had said it before. He had repeated it endlessly these past days.
Sophie felt it, his devotion–yet the insistence, the desperation, made her uneasy.
She narrowed her eyes, voice low and cautious.
“Marcus… tell me the truth. Did you do something… that betrayed me?”
