**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday by Asa Rowan Flint**

“Lena, you’d better watch yourself,” Liam warned, his voice laced with concern.

Lena’s lips quivered, and in a heartbeat, tears streamed down her cheeks. Overwhelmed by a rush of emotion, she turned and fled from the room, her footsteps echoing her distress.

Liam stood rooted to the spot, a tumult of emotions swirling within him. He wanted nothing more than to chase after her, to offer comfort, but the weight of the engagement loomed heavily in his mind, anchoring him in place.

He shifted his gaze to Sophie, concern etched across his features. “Sophie, how are you feeling now?” he asked, his eyes flicking momentarily to her lower abdomen, where a shadow of discomfort lingered.

Sophie, however, was determined not to waste her breath on him. She lay back, her voice icy as she replied, “Get out. I don’t want to see you right now.”

Liam’s fists clenched at his sides, but he fought to maintain a gentle tone. “I’ll be right outside if you need anything,” he assured her, though the words felt hollow in the charged atmosphere.

Once he exited, Sophie turned her attention to Marcus and Dr. Mason, who were still present. “I’m fine now,” she said, her voice steadier. “The banquet’s about to start. You should go.”

Dr. Mason waved her off dismissively, stepping out the door without a second thought. But Marcus remained, his expression calm yet resolute.

“Shouldn’t you be out there hosting your guests?” Sophie inquired, a hint of impatience creeping into her voice.

“There’s no rush,” Marcus replied, his demeanor unflappable.

Just as his words hung in the air, Sophie’s parents burst into the room, their eyes widening in alarm at the sight of their daughter’s pale complexion.

“Sophie!” her mother exclaimed, her voice tinged with panic. The worry in her eyes was palpable as she rushed to her side. “We heard you almost drowned!”

“I’m okay now. Mr. Morgan saved me,” Sophie reassured them, her voice softening.

Immediately, the Chandlers turned their attention to Marcus, bowing deeply in gratitude. “Thank you, Mr. Morgan, for stepping in,” they said, their respect evident.

Marcus rose from his chair, ready to leave. “Now that you’re here, I’ll leave you with her,” he said, but paused at the door, turning back to offer a final piece of advice.

“If they don’t apologize, come to me. When something happens under the Morgans’ roof, the Morgans take responsibility,” he stated firmly before exiting.

Mr. Chandler muttered under his breath, “People say Mr. Morgan has a bad temper, but he’s ten times the man Liam is. That boy’s mother even tried to stop us earlier, demanding compensation.”

“Enough,” Mrs. Chandler interjected sharply, cutting him off. “Sophie’s been terrified of water since she was little. This must’ve scared her badly. Let’s take her home.”
