**Chapter 27**

With a subtle inclination of his head, Marcus acknowledged his assistant, signaling that it was time for him to exit. The atmosphere in the room was thick with unspoken tension, a palpable weight that seemed to press down on everyone present.

Just as the door began to close behind the assistant, Lena burst into the room, her eyes immediately locking onto Liam. Without hesitation, she hurried over to his side, urgency in her every step.

“Liam, let’s just drop it, okay?” she implored, her voice trembling slightly, as though the very act of speaking might shatter the fragile peace that hung in the air.

“You didn’t do anything wrong. What are you so nervous about?” Liam replied, his brow furrowing with concern. He could see the anxiety etched across her features, and it troubled him deeply.

Sophie, leaning against the wall with an expression that could freeze fire, interjected with a chilling smile. “She’s scared the truth might come out.”

At her words, Liam felt a shiver run through him. His pupils widened as he turned his gaze to Lena, searching for answers in her downcast eyes.

She lowered her head, avoiding his penetrating stare, and in that moment, even Liam, who often struggled to grasp the subtleties of emotions, began to piece together the puzzle.

“Uncle Marcus,” Liam said, his voice steady but laced with urgency, “today’s Grandpa’s birthday banquet. If this situation escalates, no one walks away unscathed. Maybe we should just let it go?”

Sophie’s patience snapped like a brittle twig.

“Liam, is stirring up muddy waters the only thing you’re good at?” she retorted, her tone sharp and biting, as if she were wielding a dagger rather than words.

To everyone’s astonishment, Lena suddenly sank to her knees before Sophie, her vulnerability laid bare.

“Sophie, I didn’t mean to push you into the pool. I swear it wasn’t on purpose! You can hit me, yell at me, whatever you want… Just don’t blame Liam. He had nothing to do with it!” The desperation in her voice was palpable, and tears began to cascade down her cheeks, glistening like diamonds in the dim light.

Liam felt a pang of sorrow in his chest. Without a second thought, he rushed to her side, gently lifting her back to her feet.
