**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday**
by Asa Rowan Flint
Sophie pressed her lips together, caught in a web of uncertainty as she struggled to articulate her thoughts.
“Listen, Sophie,” Mrs. Chandler began, her voice laced with concern. “I can see that he cares for you, but you have to remember that he’s Liam’s little uncle, and you’re engaged to Liam. You two…” The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken complications, and Mrs. Chandler found herself unable to complete her thought. The intricacies of their situation were far too tangled to unravel in a single breath.
“Mom, please don’t overthink this,” Sophie interjected, her voice firm yet pleading. “Just go back and keep an eye on Dad. I really don’t feel comfortable leaving him alone in the hospital room.” Her excuse flowed easily, a shield against the weight of the conversation.
Mrs. Chandler let out a soft sigh, her shoulders slumping slightly as she acquiesced. “Alright, dear. I won’t press any further.” With that, she exited the room, leaving Sophie to her swirling thoughts.
Sophie had intended to lie down and gather her thoughts, but the door swung open once more, interrupting her solitude.
In strode Marcus, his long strides purposeful, a small bowl of porridge cradled in his hands.
“Why are you back so early?” Sophie blurted out, a hint of fluster creeping into her voice. A wave of anxiety washed over her. Had he overheard her conversation with her mother?
Without acknowledging her question, Marcus silently made his way to the table, meticulously arranging the bowl of porridge alongside small side dishes. He began to lift the lids one by one, revealing the steaming contents within.
Sophie felt a tightening in her chest as she curled her fingers, feeling the weight of unspoken words. “Don’t take my mom’s words to heart,” she offered, trying to bridge the silence that loomed between them.
Suddenly, Marcus lifted his gaze, locking eyes with her in an intense moment of connection. “I didn’t think too much about it,” he replied, his voice steady but lacking warmth.
Yet Sophie could sense the underlying tension; something was amiss. His expression betrayed a storm of emotions swirling beneath the surface.
“I just…” she began, her voice faltering, but Marcus cut her off with a sharpness that surprised her.
“I have to go back to the company. I’ll leave now.”
With that, he turned on his heel and strode toward the door, his back a rigid line of resolve.
“Marcus…” Sophie called out, her tone shifting to something more serious, more urgent. “Are you really leaving because of the company, or is there something else weighing on you?”
Marcus didn’t look back, his voice drifting back to her like a distant echo. “Drink the porridge while it’s hot.”
And just like that, he vanished from her sight, leaving Sophie in the quiet room, her heart racing as unease settled in the pit of her stomach.
Zack Mason, who had been lingering nearby, caught sight of Marcus’s departure and hurried over, concern etched across his face. “Marcus, didn’t you say you were going to stay and eat with Sophie? Why are you leaving so soon?”
Marcus’s voice was heavy with unspoken burdens. “I’m going back to the company.”
Zack Mason could sense the turmoil within Marcus, the weight of his emotions palpable in the air. Putting together the pieces of the situation, he ventured cautiously, “Did you argue with Mrs. Chandler?”
Marcus remained silent, and Zack pressed on, “It’s not surprising if you did. After all, you’re Liam’s little uncle and Sophie’s fiancée. It’s a complicated situation.”
Zack hesitated, sensing the shift in Marcus’s demeanor. “You being with Sophie… her family would find it hard to accept…” he began, but a chill ran down his spine, halting his words abruptly.
Marcus’s voice turned icy. “Her mother thinks the same as you, but I don’t believe this ‘little uncle’ role can affect anything.”
“Then why don’t you just tell Sophie about everything?” Zack asked, confusion clouding his mind.
Marcus paused, his gaze darkening as he contemplated the weight of his words. “Her father is still in critical condition. Now’s not the time to discuss this.”
Zack Mason halted, sensing the tension that hung thick in the air. He let out a deep sigh, realizing the truth behind the phrase “Love makes the powerful become timid.” Marcus was undeniably in love with Sophie.
