**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday by Asa Rowan Flint**
Sophie felt a sudden tension in her hand, which rested at her side, as she confronted Liam. “Liam, what exactly do you want to do?” The question hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions.
“I’ve told you before, Sophie. My intention is straightforward. I simply want to help protect the company until your uncle is back on his feet. There’s nothing more to it,” Liam replied, his tone unyielding.
Sophie took a decisive step forward, narrowing the space between them. “This is my family’s company, Liam. We don’t need an outsider like you to guard it.” Her voice was firm, tinged with a mix of defiance and protectiveness.
“If you’re looking to play power games, why not take your act to Morgan Group? Don’t involve yourself with my Chandler Group!” she snapped, her frustration boiling over.
Liam couldn’t help but sneer, an expression that revealed the turmoil beneath his calm facade. With a deliberate effort, he lifted both arms, showing off the casts that encased them.
“Sophie, as you can see, your uncle had someone break my arms and fired me from my position at Morgan Group,” he said, his voice laced with bitterness. “Since Morgan Group won’t accept me back, I’ve come here to make a name for myself at Chandler Group!”
Sophie’s gaze fell on the casts, and a flicker of guilt washed over her. “Don’t make things up,” she shot back, desperately trying to maintain her composure.
She hadn’t seen Marcus in days and was completely in the dark about the circumstances surrounding Liam’s injuries. She didn’t know if Marcus had a hand in it, but admitting ignorance now would only raise suspicions about her connection to him.
If she acknowledged that, she would be trapped in a web of lies, and clearing her name would become an impossible task.
Liam stepped closer, towering over her, his eyes piercing through her defenses. “Sophie, doesn’t your defense sound a bit weak? What’s your actual relationship with my uncle, and why has he gone to such lengths for you?”
In that moment, Sophie felt the shift in Liam’s demeanor. The mask of civility he had worn for so long was slipping away, revealing the ambition that lay beneath—a dangerous ambition that no one had noticed until now. Had he not been abruptly fired from Morgan Group, she doubted he would have exposed this side of himself.
Steadying her breath, she slipped her hand into her pocket, reaching for her phone, a lifeline to the outside world.
But Liam was quick to catch on. He pressed her hand down, stopping her.
“Sophie, are you feeling guilty?” he smirked, a glint of accusation in his eyes. “You really did get involved with my uncle, didn’t you? Behind my back, you’ve been placing the blame squarely on me.”
“Liam, you don’t need to push all the blame onto me,” Sophie replied, striving to keep her voice steady. “I don’t know why Mr. Morgan fired you, but I suspect it has something to do with Liora.”
“You’ve been in Morgan Group’s design department for years, and the only thing you’ve accomplished is Liora. But now, because of our personal interests, you’ve ruined Liora and tarnished Morgan Group’s reputation for poor oversight,” he retorted, his tone sharp.
Sophie met his gaze unflinchingly. “Liam, you’ve caused a scandal for Morgan Group. If Marcus doesn’t discipline you for this, do you really think that’s his style?”
For a fleeting moment, Liam’s expression faltered, as if her words had struck a chord. Sophie’s logic was undeniably sound; Marcus valued Morgan Group above all else, and the scandal Liam had instigated was a significant blow to their reputation. It was only natural for Marcus to take action against him.
“Sophie, I’m already shocked that you deceived me by making Lena pretend to be Liora in that competition. Now, you’re accusing me of disloyalty?” His voice was steady, but there was an undercurrent of frustration. “Do you really not know what kind of person your uncle is? How could I possibly catch his eye?”
