**Chapter 79**

Sophie, with a light tap on her phone screen, swiftly added Marcus to her blacklist. The decision felt liberating; after all, why continue to embarrass herself in front of someone who seemed to revel in her discomfort?

As evening descended, Liam arrived at the Chandler house to pick Sophie up. They wasted no time and headed directly to Silverwood Estates. This neighborhood, with its lush greenery and pristine streets, was where Liam’s family resided—a place that shimmered with affluence in the heart of Riverland. It was a legacy left to him by his father, a tangible reminder of a bond that death could not sever. It was the one piece of his life that he could truly claim as his own, a sanctuary amidst the chaos of his emotions.

When they reached the villa, the car rolled to a halt, and Sophie noticed the front yard was devoid of life. No welcoming figures emerged to greet them. She shrugged off the absence, her mind preoccupied with the uncertainty of the evening ahead as she followed Liam through the grand entrance.

Before they could step fully into the living room, a voice cut through the air like a sharp knife.

“I told you, my son would win Sophie over, didn’t I? Last time, she made a fool of me at the old man’s banquet, and now look—she’s practically begging to marry my son!”

Irene’s words dripped with a mix of triumph and disdain.

“If she behaves after the wedding, it might be bearable, but if she continues to act like a spoiled little girl, I won’t stand for it!”

Sophie couldn’t help but scoff at Irene’s audacity. “Liam, is your mother intentionally trying to intimidate me?”

Liam waved his hands in a frantic gesture, trying to diffuse the tension. “Sophie, please don’t take it the wrong way. My mom can be a bit… eccentric at times. She probably got a little too excited about our wedding plans and had one too many drinks.”

He rushed over to Irene, snatching the wine glass from her fingers.

“Mom, Sophie’s here! You didn’t even greet her, and instead, you’re saying all this?” His voice was a mix of frustration and concern.

Irene’s lips pressed into a thin line. “We’re about to be family. What’s the point of greeting her? She’s not a guest.”

Sophie felt her grip on her handbag tighten, but she chose silence, retreating to a corner of the room.

Seeing her retreat, Irene’s demeanor only grew more arrogant. “Look at her! If she wants to marry my son, she should know how to handle herself. One misstep, and I’ll make sure my son breaks it off!”

“Honestly, if she’s so eager to marry my son, she should just go to the civil affairs bureau and get the certificate. Why all this fuss with relatives and friends, setting a wedding date?”

A sister-in-law, noticing Irene’s harshness, gently tugged at her sleeve. “We’re going to be a family now. Let’s not be so cruel; she might get hurt.”

“Why would she feel hurt? It’s clear she’s overly eager to marry my son; she can hardly contain herself!” Irene shot back, her words aimed squarely at Sophie.

But Sophie, though stung by the remarks, chose to ignore them. She had endured worse from Irene before; why let these words affect her now?

Liam sat beside her, his expression softening. “Sophie, my mom just speaks her mind. She doesn’t mean anything by it. Don’t let it get to you.”

“She’s our elder, after all. Once you marry me, you’ll have to call her ‘Mom,’ so don’t let a few words upset you.”

Sophie turned to him, her eyes dull and distant. “Is there any alcohol?”

Liam looked taken aback. “Sophie, you…”

“Please, just bring me some wine. Thank you.”

“Well, today is a significant day—we’re finalizing our wedding plans. It’s definitely worth celebrating. I’ll get you some wine.”

Muttering to himself, Liam moved toward the kitchen and retrieved a bottle of wine.

Before he could pour it into a glass, Sophie snatched the bottle from his hands and tilted it back, taking a long swig.

The fiery liquid burned its way down her throat, and she shuddered involuntarily at the sensation. Tears brimmed in her eyes, yet she clutched the bottle tightly, unwilling to let go.

“Sophie, that’s not how you’re supposed to drink,” Liam said, concern etched on his face as he reached for the bottle again.

She yanked it away, defiant. “I’m fine.”
