To her surprise, it actually existed.
Cherry had been desperately waiting for her message.
She responded with measured enthusiasm.
Having been disappointed too many times, Cherry knew she had to sift through the dirt to find gold in these rare opportunities.
"Understood. Just give the word, Ms. Lynd."
Right before hanging up, Zoe stopped her.
"Close and terminate all the accounts that have been transferring funds to Sienna Winters."
Cherry's pale, slender hand trembled around her phone.
Even her voice lost its confidence.
She honestly thought she was hearing things.
"What do you mean, Ms. Lynd?"
Zoe replied coldly, "Why should I give my hard-earned money to someone else?"
There was a sudden panic on the other end of the line, followed by a solid thud.
It sounded like something heavy had just collapsed.
Besides Zoe, everyone at Easton Group felt the massive shift in the atmosphere.
Hayden never returned to the office after riding in the ambulance with Sienna.
Zoe finished her shift as usual.
She noticed that almost all her coworkers were actively avoiding her in the halls.
It was as if she carried the plague.
That evening, after picking Lily up and heading home, Zoe found a new text message on her phone.
Surprisingly, it was from Valerie Yates.
"Mr. Thorne already knows about your little stunt with Sienna today. Just wait to be fired, Zoe."
Zoe let out a cold scoff, placed her phone face down on the table, and went back to eating dinner and doing homework with Lily.
Mrs. Gable's attitude toward Zoe had been noticeably shifting day by day.
Zoe could feel it; the housekeeper was acting much more respectful toward her.
After giving Lily a bath, Zoe finished reading her a bedtime story.
Staring at her daughter's sleeping face under the soft glow of the bedside lamp, Zoe felt a profound warmth swell in her chest.
Years ago, her own mother used to do the exact same thing.
She would sit quietly by her side every night, watching over her until she drifted off.
Hayden's expression remained as dark and deep as a frozen lake, radiating a suffocating coldness.
"Do you see a third person here?"
Zoe nearly choked on her milk, staring at him like he was a complete lunatic.
By the time she locked eyes with him, she almost laughed out loud.
"Mr. Thorne, are you out of your mind? The dark ages ended a long time ago. You want me to go stand in the storm? Do you have any idea how hard it's raining out there? Who do you think you are? Do I freeload off of you? Even if I live here, shouldn't I? We're legally married, and I work my ass off for your company. I earn my keep. Hayden, is your brain flooded with all that rainwater? Am I your servant? Have you been watching too many cheap soap operas and fried your brain?"
Still holding her glass of milk, Zoe slammed her bedroom door right in his face.
Hayden clenched his hands into tight fists at his sides. His left hand had been stomped on by Zoe's stiletto earlier that afternoon, and the bones still felt distinctly misaligned.
Sienna had barely stepped foot in the office before Zoe slapped her in the face.
He had assumed that over the past five years, Zoe had learned some basic respect.
He never imagined she'd have the audacity to lay her hands on Sienna.
Hayden's face grew dangerously dark.
He figuredβ
He had been letting his physical desires cloud his judgment lately.
He had been giving her far too much leeway.
