I Forgot I Ever Loved You novel Chapter 14

"Mommy, I'm going to go upstairs."

She seemed terrified of Hayden. Zoe frowned slightly. Wasn't he the child's father? Why was he wearing such a suffocating, grim expression in front of his own kid?

Hayden's icy gaze swept over her and Lily. Under the oppressive weight of his stare, Zoe would normally have walked straight over to apologize for being late.

"Mommy will go with you. Let's take a bubble bath before bed, okay?"

Zoe crouched down and playfully tapped her nose against Lily's. She noticed the little girl steal a glance at Hayden before trembling slightly, her small hand gripping Zoe's even tighter.

"Okay."

She was really scared of Daddy, but Mommy seemed different today.

She was so nice and spoiled her so much.

Zoe simply scooped Lily up in her arms and walked right past Hayden without so much as a sideways glance, heading straight up the stairs.

Hayden had been waiting for her to come groveling, only to be completely ignored.

A vein throbbed visibly on his forehead. The man gripped an exquisite lighter, his thumb pressing down on the flint wheel. With a harsh flick, a blue flame erupted.

"Mommy, Daddy is mad."

"Oh, really? Let's just ignore him."

With a sharp snap, Hayden slammed the lighter shut, his face livid, his hand trembling slightly.

Was he hearing things?

Did Zoe really just say that?

Mrs. Gable had heard it loud and clear. She had also seen Mr. Thorne nearly burn his own fingers before snapping the lighter shut, his expression absolutely glacial.

She had only seen him look like this once before—the day he received the wedding invitation from his younger brother and Sienna. But that had been five years ago.

Having watched the two boys grow up, Mrs. Gable knew that the eldest brother was the most unfathomable.

He rarely showed any emotion, let alone over a secretly married wife he had never cared about.

His clenched fists and twisted expression were a stark contrast to the unshakeable Hayden who hadn't even blinked when his own father died. Seeing him like this now was bizarre and unsettling.

The sound of the lighter clicked again, and a cigarette appeared between Hayden's lips.
