Sienna's manicured nails dug so hard into her palms they nearly drew blood.
What did he mean no other option?
Lily was sitting right there, perfectly healthy, and the deal had been set years ago.
Why was Hayden suddenly going back on his word to protect those two?
She simply couldn't comprehend it.
"Right. I understand."
Maybe it was just because Lily was still too young.
True, she wasn't quite four yet.
But she would be soon.
Holden was Charles Thorne's flesh and blood.
Would Hayden really stand by and watch his own nephew die?
And Grandmother Thorne certainly wouldn't let Zoe and Lily off the hook when the time came.
A dark smile curled Sienna's lips.
Zoe couldn't outplay her.
Just wait and see.
Down the hall, Hayden carried Lily back and pushed open the door to Zoe's holding room.
The moment Zoe saw her daughter lying completely motionless in his arms, her heart dropped into her stomach.
"Hayden, what did you do to my daughter? I'll kill you!"
She lunged at him like a wild animal.
Hayden stood completely still, letting her fists rain down against his chest in a desperate frenzy.
Only when she finally tired herself out, her rage giving way to exhaustion, did he gently press Lily into her arms.
"She's fine. She'll wake up soon."
Hayden watched the woman's face, his expression completely unreadable.
He had to admit, seeing her so frantic and utterly shattered felt like a sick kind of justice.
She finally knew what it felt like to be on the receiving end of the blade.
Did it ever cross her mind when she lashed out at his mother, his brother, and his nephew that he was human too?
That he could bleed just as easily?
Zoe snatched Lily from him, crushing the little girl tightly against her chest.
Listening to the steady, even rhythm of Lily's breathing, she realized her daughter really was okay.
The crushing weight on her chest finally lifted.
Hayden stared at her coldly, delivering one final warning.
"I'm telling you this once. You don't lay a hand on Sienna again, and you do not touch a single hair on Holden's head."
Zoe didn't even process his words. Her entire universe was the sleeping child in her arms.
Her sweet Lily. Thank god she was safe.
If anything had happened to her, Zoe would have murdered Sienna with her bare hands.
"I'll take you home."
Afraid Zoe might try to make a run for it again, Hayden personally escorted them out.
To Zoe, it felt like being marched out under armed guard.
She didn't say a single word to him the entire walk to the car.
Colin Zachs pulled up to the curb. Seeing the frosty tension radiating off both of them, he knew instantly that they had fought again.
But something was off. Usually, Zoe would be trailing behind the boss, looking miserable and pleading.
Today, Hayden's face looked far darker than hers.
And yet, he kept shooting covert glances her way, looking suspiciously like a man trying to figure out how to make peace.
"You sit in the front. Lily and I are taking the back."
