Grandmother Thorne hung up the phone in a rage.
Hayden pressed his lips into a tight line but continued to wait patiently.
Finally, Sienna glided downstairs in a highly extravagant gown, while Holden was squeezed into a tailored suit, looking every bit the pampered young master. The mother, son, and Nita all piled into Hayden's car.
The birthday banquet had already begun.
After waiting anxiously and seeing no sign of Hayden, Grandmother Thorne's temper flared.
"We start without them."
Dressed in a traditional red silk ensemble, she accepted the guests' blessings.
Arthur Kendall Sr. had his men carry in a priceless antique sculpture worth hundreds of millions of dollars, instantly making it the most spectacular gift of the night.
Grandmother Thorne should have been thrilled, but her mood soured the moment she saw her granddaughter-in-law sitting next to Arthur's grandson, Garrett. Unwilling to cause a scene, she maintained a polite facade.
She accepted the gift while burning with impatience for Hayden to arrive.
She repeatedly ordered the servants to call him, but the calls went straight to voicemail.
The guests had all taken their seats and were just about to raise their glasses for a collective toast, wishing her longevity and prosperity, when Hayden finally made his entrance.
Trailing closely beside him was the extravagantly dressed Sienna, while Hayden carried Holden in his arms. The entire room's attention snapped instantly to Hayden and Sienna.
Undoubtedly, Sienna's outfit completely upstaged the guest of honor.
She was young and beautiful, her makeup aggressively seductive. She swayed as she walked, her figure so impeccably maintained that she looked like she had never given birth. Her shoulders were bare, and the high slit of her gown offered tantalizing flashes of her legs with every step.
The moment Grandmother Thorne saw Sienna, her scowl deepened. Even the estate servants were disgusted by her display.
"Today is my birthday, and she dresses like a woman of the night. Does she have any respect for the Thorne family's reputation?"
Fuming, Grandmother Thorne watched as Hayden and Sienna approached her. Sienna offered her gift with a dazzling smile: "Wishing you, Grandmotherβ"
Before she could even finish her congratulatory sentence, Grandmother Thorne signaled a servant to snatch the gift from Sienna's hands and toss it to the side.
"That's enough. Find a seat. Hayden, come with me to toast the room."
Sienna froze. On an occasion like this, wasn't she, as a Thorne daughter-in-law, supposed to walk the room with Hayden?
Grandmother Thorne clearly had no intention of giving her that chance.
She kept her eyes locked on Hayden.
Hayden had no intention of disrespecting his grandmother publicly. He stepped to her side.
"Go get Zoe. You two will accompany me together."
Sienna felt like she had been struck by lightning.
What was the old lady plotting? Having Zoe and Hayden stand together to receive blessings? Zoe had never once been seen publicly with Hayden. If they did this, the entire high society circle would realize their relationship.
Grandmother Thorne wanted to legitimize Zoe's status as Mrs. Thorne right in front of everyone!
Hayden frowned slightly, hesitating.
