Hayden suddenly reached out, yanking her into his arms.
Under the cold moonlight, their shadows merged into one.
He reached up and tore the necklace right off her neck.
"Still wearing it? Tired of Hunter Keating, so you've moved on to seducing Garrett Stone?"
Zoe's temper flared. She glared at him in the darkness. "Give it back."
What the hell was wrong with him in the middle of the night? Was he trying to put on a show for the staff?
Hayden refused. Whatever Garrett bought her, was it something he, Hayden Thorne, couldn't afford? She was about to go to sleep and still refused to take it off.
Clutching the necklace, he lit the fireplace right in front of her.
Zoe watched him, a knot tightening in her chest. "Hayden, don't push it."
He tossed the jewelry straight into the blazing fire.
Without hesitating, Zoe lunged, reaching into the flames. Hayden's heart skipped a beat as he violently yanked her back.
"Are you out of your mind? Do you want to lose your hand?" It was a roaring fire.
Zoe glared at him, furious. "You're the one who's crazy. You're an absolute psycho."
He stared into her eyes, confronted by a level of raw hatred he had never seen from her before. A sudden, suffocating tightness gripped his chest. It was an unfamiliar ache, spreading through his body like shattered glass.
She shoved him away. "Go take care of your woman and your nephew. Don't come here acting like a lunatic."
Hayden ground his teeth. "Don't forget, we are legally married. What exactly were you trying to prove playing couples with Garrett in front of all those people? Are you trying to humiliate me, or just desperate for my attention? Mrs. Thorne, you've pulled these stunts plenty of times. I'll admit, this one was different. But please, act your age."
Zoe looked at him through the moonlight, absolutely floored. Her expression was pure disbelief. "Me? Putting on a show so you'd pay attention to me?"
Was she hearing things? Strangely, the sheer absurdity of it calmed her down. She pulled her bruised wrist from his grip. The man had to be drunk, losing his mind on liquor. Was he mistaking her for Sienna?
Having lost her appetite, Zoe turned and headed upstairs. Hayden didn't get so much as a backward glance. He watched helplessly as she disappeared and the bedroom door clicked shut.
The great hall fell into a dead silence. Hayden stared into the fireplace, watching the flames devour the necklace Garrett had given her. Only then did the twisted knot in his stomach loosen slightly.
He walked over to the bar and poured himself a glass of vodka. Slumping onto the sofa, he sat there like a man with a broken heart, taking slow, deliberate sips.
Nearing dawn, the doorbell of Blackwood Manor chimed. Someone stepped into the hall and flipped on the lights. The sudden glare stung Hayden's eyes.
He glared at the man in the doorway, his face cast in shadow. "What are you doing here?"
Quentin Muir stared right back. "Didn't you have Colin call me down here?"
Hayden took a harsh swig of his drink. At the top of the stairs, a stunning silhouette appeared.
