"Zoe, where are you right now?"
Hearing Garrett's voice, Hayden's thick brows furrowed deeply, and a cruel, predatory smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
"She's with me. In bed."
Garrett assumed Hayden was just making a tasteless joke to rile him up.
"Mr. Thorne, this isn't funny. I expect you to bring Zoe back to me completely unharmed."
Garrett was genuinely terrified for Zoe's safety.
Why else would Hayden have her phone?
He found this kind of provocation incredibly juvenile.
"Zoe and I are legally married. My wife is currently in my bed. Is there a problem with that?"
Hayden's counter-question left Garrett speechless.
It was true that Hayden and Zoe were still legally married.
They had their divorce papers, but Command HQ had rejected the application pending a home visit. As the man currently sheltering Zoe, if the authorities investigated, Garrett could be accused of interfering with a military marriage—even if his relationship with Zoe was completely platonic. That would be a catastrophic charge.
But—
Hayden's arrogance was infuriating.
Garrett hadn't held out much hope of actually ending up with Zoe.
But his feelings for her weren't something he could just turn off.
He had gradually come to view her as a cherished younger sister, and he knew exactly how horribly Hayden had treated her in the past.
"Impossible. Zoe deserves a man who will actually treat her right. Even if that man isn't me, there's no way in hell she's getting back together with you. You don't need to feed me these lies, Mr. Thorne.
Several times, Zoe stopped speaking entirely, trapping herself in a long, agonizing silence. Even Dr. Aris shot Hayden a questioning look, silently asking if they should stop the session.
Zoe was in far too much pain. She was reliving every horrific detail of the past five years inside her mind. The trauma of her recovered memories was violently clashing with her current consciousness.
"Mr. Thorne, your wife is exhibiting severe resistance. Should we continue?"
Even the hypnotherapist couldn't bear to listen anymore.
A faint trace of red rimmed Hayden's eyes. He violently suppressed his emotions, refusing to give up.
If the therapist was asking to stop, it meant Zoe had already recovered her memories. He couldn't just end it here.
She had forgotten him, which meant she had forgotten how much she loved him.
She had given birth to a son and a daughter for him, and now she wanted to take them and leave him—leave the Thorne family—forever. He absolutely would not allow it.
Before this, he had clung to the hope that Zoe was just playing a twisted game of hard-to-get. But when he found out she had transferred Ian's registry to the Kendall family, he realized the situation was far more catastrophic than he had imagined.
