It felt as if speaking up for her just once was an agonizing chore for him.
"Rest assured, that's impossible," Hayden said, a slight frown marring his features as he took issue with her words.
"Commander Thorne, your mother couldn't win an argument against me. I told her that the little disaster she's coddling might not even be a Thorne. She's probably busy doubting your sweetheart right now. You'd better spend some time checking on her. And I heard she fled the country, owing me millions of dollars, terrified of a travel ban. Do me a favor and put some effort into catching her for me."
Her words plunged Hayden into silence.
Zoe had fully expected a sharp rebuttal, or at least a cynical sneer. But after a long pause, her expectations fell flat for the first time.
"Fine, I get it. If my mother bothers you again, just ignore her. As for Sienna, I'll figure something out."
Gripping her phone, Zoe felt like she was listening to a fairy tale.
He would figure something out regarding Sienna?
What was he going to do, help her catch a fugitive debt-dodger? She was just about to mock him relentlessly, but he hung up.
A dismissive smirk touched Zoe's lips, and she quickly cast the incident from her mind.
Neither the Thorne family nor anyone else could occupy her thoughts anymore.
Her time and energy were solely dedicated to her work, Garrett's family, Lily, and little Ian.
After finishing her shift at Fort Hamilton Command Center, Garrett drove her back to the Kendall Estate.
Yara Quinn accompanied her. Yara had been assigned as Zoe's around-the-clock bodyguard.
Naturally, she followed Zoe home.
"It is my duty," Yara replied with absolute seriousness. "You don't need to thank me. I won't accept the gratitude." With that, she sat on the sofa opposite Zoe, her back ramrod straight, radiating a strictly professional aura.
Sylvia and Mr. Kendall Sr. exchanged a bewildered look. While Garrett was used to Yara's demeanor, he worried his parents might feel uncomfortable and quickly tried to smooth things over.
"Dad, Mom, protecting Zoe is Yara's job. There's really no need for pleasantries."
Yara didn't even blink at Garrett's defense.
"Officer Quinn," Zoe said, "you're free to move around and relax while we're here."
Yara shot her a detached glance, her heart as cold as her face. "You don't need to persuade me. Whoever pays my salary gets my full dedication. Protecting you is my responsibility. Aside from eating and sleeping, I will not leave your side.
Of course, if there is a special situation where I need to step back, just tell me. I will step back, but otherwise, Ms. Lynd, you will have to get used to my presence."
