Garrett panicked and shot a nervous glance at Zoe.
Zoe continued eating as if she hadn't heard a thing, secretly laughing to herself.
Right on cue, Yara walked back inside.
Everyone at the table turned their eyes on her.
Arthur walked past Yara with his cup of tea, letting out a cold scoff that instantly put her on high alert.
Yara stood there, bewildered.
The rest of the family quickly buried their faces in their plates, lost in their own thoughts.
No one greeted Yara.
Lily pointed a chubby finger at Garrett and grinned at Yara. "Aunt Yara, Uncle Garrett totally likes you."
Garrett died on the inside.
Little Ian dropped his spoon in excitement, getting frustrated, and frantically reached for another.
He was practically climbing onto the table.
Yara's expression remained perfectly icy. It took her a moment to process the words before she stated flatly, "I don't like men."
Garrett's heart instantly shattered into pieces.
Zoe looked up in surprise, a hint of wariness creeping into her eyes.
Yara stood tall and unwavering, her voice sharp and emotionless.
"To be precise, I have no interest in romantic entanglements of any kind. Rest assured, Ms. Lynd, I don't like women either. I just don't like people."
With that, she checked her watch. "My lunch break has started. I will return in approximately thirty minutes."
The dining room fell completely silent.
Sylvia's elegant face crinkled with worry. She let out a long, heavy sigh.
Well, this was a disaster.
Her son either had zero interest in dating, or he fell for a married woman. And now, in his most ridiculous phase yet, he had fallen for a flesh-and-blood cyborg who despised humanity.
This Officer Quinn seemed a hundred times harder to win over than Zoe.
Furthermore, because Sienna was out of the country, even if she was dragged back, she couldn't be charged with a crime for refusing to pay since there was no money to seize. Even if she could be charged, civil disputes didn't result in criminal jail time, at most a brief detention twice a year, and it was hard to enforce. The court wouldn't go hunting down a debtor on her behalf.
Zoe rubbed her temples and let out a dark, bitter laugh.
The Thorne family hadn't disappointed her.
They dropped a nuclear bomb and spun it into a spectacular fireworks show.
When the smoke cleared, the only ones left in ashes were the innocent stockholders and the investors whose money vanished into thin air.
Sienna hadn't suffered a single scratch.
But that didn't mean Zoe was going to let this go.
In her hypnotized memories, faint images lingered.
On her first night with Hayden, she hadn't willingly crawled into his bed. Someone had slipped something into her drink.
She couldn't see the person's face, nor did she know their gender.
This meant her entire marriage to Hayden had been a calculated trap from the very beginning.
