Hayden completely ignored her first sentence, zeroing in only on what served his purpose.
"Officer Quinn certainly can't do twenty-four hours. At the very least, she needs to sleep at night. Officer Quinn and I will split the shifts. She'll handle the day, and I'll handle the night."
Zoe gaped at him.
The sheer audacity of his words was breathtaking.
Trembling with anger, she shot back, "The night? In your dreams!"
A faint, rare smile touched Hayden's lips, softening the harsh, unyielding lines of his handsome face.
It was devastatingly attractive.
"By 'the night', I simply mean keeping watch at your door. I can sleep on the floor in the hallway, or right outside your bedroom. I have no idea where your mind went, Ms. Lynd, but your face is awfully red."
He pointed out her flushed cheeks, deliberately twisting her words to humiliate her.
Garrett understood perfectly. A mocking smirk curled on his lips as he shook his head in disbelief.
He had been too arrogant, assuming that bringing Zoe into the Kendall household would shield her from all of this. He had vastly underestimated Hayden's terrifying background and bottomless shamelessness.
Only Hayden Thorne could brazenly demand to sleep on the floor like a guard dog.
"Hayden, are you a dog? What is the point of this?"
Furious, Zoe wanted nothing more than to bite his head off right then and there.
Mr. Kendall Sr. and Sylvia examined the document before carefully handing it over to Arthur. A massive headache throbbed behind Arthur's temples.
"Enough. It's late. Everyone, go back to your rooms."
Only Arthur had the authority and experience to verify the authenticity of an Executive Mandate.
In all his years, he had only seen a document of this caliber three times.
Every single time, it had heralded an earth-shattering event.
Enraged and thoroughly disgusted, he refused to entertain the madness and stormed off.
Zoe had just entered her room. Hearing Hayden's approaching footsteps, she slammed the door shut and locked it tight.
Hayden stood outside her door for a few seconds before casually opening the door to the adjacent guest room, the one closest to hers, and perfectly positioned near the kids' rooms, and walked inside.
Zoe drifted off to sleep holding little Ian. Deep into the night, she thought she heard a faint scratching at her door, but as she strained to listen, the sound vanished.
Her phone screen suddenly lit up in the dark. She picked it up, and a text message flashed across the screen.
"The Harvest Moon Festival is coming up. I remember your favorite is Yolk Custard Pastries. The moon is incredibly bright tonight, and I can't sleep. Want to look at the moon with me?"
Zoe stared at the screen, utterly exhausted.
Terrified that he would escalate his harassment and wake the entire house, she quickly typed a response.
"Stop being a psycho in the middle of the night. If you make another sound, I'm calling the cops."
