She had had enough.
She had no idea what massive emergency had called the man away, but if she had to guess, one of his lovers probably needed him, demanding his immediate warmth and affection.
Otherwise, what else could make the high-and-mighty Hayden Thorne run off in the middle of the night like his tail was on fire?
It would be best if she never saw him again—in this life or the next.
Thinking about how she used to cling to him like a desperate accessory made Zoe feel utterly ashamed.
Hayden's very existence was a walking reminder of her past pathetic behavior. Even though she had lost her memories, she still felt profoundly humiliated. The only way she could pretend none of it had happened was if this man completely vanished from her life.
"..."
Garrett had seen enough of Hayden lately to know the man was shameless, thick-skinned, and relentlessly stubborn.
He sighed helplessly. "I'll try my best."
Mr. Kendall Sr. and Sylvia exchanged an amused smile, silently understanding the dynamic.
Kicking out a professional scoundrel like Hayden was going to take some real effort.
Zoe wasn't entirely satisfied with Garrett's noncommittal answer, but considering how Hayden kissed up to the Kendalls and they still hadn't caved—continuing to protect little Ian and her—she was already incredibly grateful.
"If you ask me, Ms. Lynd shouldn't waste her breath," Yara Quinn interjected. She was usually a woman of few words who stayed out of everyone's business. No one knew what part of Zoe's statement had struck a chord, but she actually spoke up.
"???"
Yara continued, "Commander Thorne used to be my superior. Once he makes a decision, he rarely turns back, and very few people can change his mind."
Zoe completely agreed with Yara. To be that shameless took a special kind of person.
Hayden's plane landed in City Y at eight o'clock in the evening.
"I told her to do it. Hayden, we're living a very happy life now. You don't need to visit anymore."
Hayden and Quentin exchanged a glance. Hayden didn't push it, merely nodding. "Fine. I just came to see you and make sure you were safe. I'll be leaving now."
Sienna offered to walk Hayden and Quentin out, but Charles stopped her, turning to her with ultimate tenderness.
"Sienna, I'll walk him out. You stay here with Holden."
Sienna looked at Hayden and Quentin with sincere apology. "Hayden, Dr. Muir, I guess I won't keep you."
Charles escorted them to the door, his face dead serious.
"Hayden, I hope you keep your word."
Hayden looked at him. "You mean you want to cut ties with everyone in the family from now on?"
