When Hayden remained silent, Quentin cleared his throat. "Zoe snapping out of it was a freak coincidence. It's hard to say if Charles will ever recover. This kind of thing relies on pure luck, unless the person pulling the strings suddenly grows a conscience and gives him the antidote."
Quentin's addition was completely useless.
After a brief silence, Quentin suddenly asked, "When did you first notice something was wrong with Zoe?"
Hayden shot Quentin a fleeting glare through the rearview mirror.
"The time she called me her brother-in-law."
He said it with extreme reluctance, but Quentin nearly burst out laughing.
"Brother-in-law? Well, you essentially are someone else's brother-in-law! If Zoe hadn't been drugged into sleeping with you, you and Sienna might have alreadyβ"
"Enough. One more word and you can buy your own ticket home."
A flicker of deep satisfaction crossed Quentin's face.
This eternally frozen iceberg, this utterly ruthless man, finally had someone who could keep him in check.
"Now you know the truth, aren't you sorry for how you treated her?"
Quentin didn't dare say it out loud, afraid Hayden would murder him on the spot.
"It doesn't matter who was right or wrong. Zoe lost control, and everything around her spiraled out of control, too."
He lit a cigarette. Through the plumes of smoke, a faint veil of sorrow seemed to settle over him, leaving Quentin absolutely dumbfounded.
"Are you... lovesick?"
Had Hayden actually fallen for Zoe?
No way.
Hayden tossed him a look that clearly said *get the hell out*, and Quentin immediately shut his mouth.
When they arrived at their hotel, Hayden stood by the window for a long time, staring out at the distant cityscape.
Quentin finally couldn't hold back. "Are you really going to leave Charles here by himself?"
A mocking smirk tugged at the corner of Hayden's mouth. "Given his current state, do you have a better idea than knocking him out and dragging him home?"
Quentin: "..."
He honestly didn't.
Zoe had been poisoned and spent five years terrorizing Hayden, mutilating herself whenever he wasn't around.
If they forcefully brought Charles home, a grown man like him might go crazy and commit murder or arson.
"What about Sienna? Can't we trick her into coming back?"
Hayden glanced sideways at him. "Your IQ must have dropped significantly since we landed."
Honestly, Quentin was just too curious.
Wasn't this tangled web of Hayden's family drama better than a Hollywood thriller?
Hayden crushed his cigarette in the ashtray and walked slowly over to the sofa, taking a seat.
Half of his face was hidden in the gloomy shadows, making him look exceptionally menacing.
Not in love?
Who was he trying to fool?
Afraid of Hayden's retaliation, Quentin quickly changed the subject.
"What's the plan next?"
He assumed Hayden would want to stay in the country for at least a while.
"We're going back."
"..."
So he was just abandoning Charles?
Quentin was struggling to understand Hayden's logic.
What did that mean? The man deeply cared about his brother, yet the moment he confirmed he was alive, he was just going to abandon him and fly home?
It didn't make any logical sense.
"If I don't make a move, the people in the shadows will. They won't just let Charles retire peacefully abroad and live happily ever after with Sienna and their son."
Hayden had a solid point.
Quentin took another sip of wine.
To be honest, the hotel's wine was pretty fantastic. He needed to pack a few bottles for the trip back.
