He vaguely remembered that the day he spent millions on a fireworks show for Hailey's birthday was also Gillian's birthday.
She had asked him what time he was coming home. She had cooked dinner, and perhaps she had even baked a birthday cake herself.
A wave of irritation washed over York. He tugged at his tie. He couldn't pinpoint when it started, but she kept saying she didn't love him anymore and constantly demanded a divorce.
Maybe it started the day he celebrated Hailey's birthday.
No, it probably started the day she found out Miles was returning to the country. The man she truly loved had never been him.
York curled his lips into a cold sneer.
"No need."
"Your wife called several times today saying she needed to discuss something with you," Julian reported, having relayed the message multiple times already. But York had been too busy working to care.
He always knew there would come a day when Gillian would have to come and beg him personally.
He stood up, grabbed his jacket, and drove to the hospital.
-
In the ward.
Gillian had fallen asleep resting her head on the edge of her mother's bed. She was a light sleeper, and with so much weighing on her mind, the sound of footsteps woke her immediately. She opened her eyes to see York standing in the doorway.
The man walked over and draped his jacket over her shoulders. "Didn't I tell you to sleep in the RV?"
She stood up and followed him out into the hallway.
York stared at her face, his voice flat. "Julian said you had something to tell me."
"You ordered all the medical institutions not to hire me."
He looked at her, reaching out to stroke her delicate cheek. His thumb brushed back and forth across her skin, but his voice was completely detached. "Isn't it nice being the perfect wife at home?"
"You have fine dining and luxury. I'll even take care of your mother's affairs for you."
