Gillian tightened her grip on her phone.
She glanced toward her mother's hospital bed. Post-operative care, combined with neurological treatments, cost nearly thirty thousand dollars a month. Even with her original salary, it would be a struggle.
Now, with a demotion and a pay cut, how was she supposed to afford her mother's medical bills?
She had to divorce York. She couldn't afford to stay trapped in this grave of a marriage forever.
"Okay... I understand," Gillian said softly. "You've helped me so much, Miles. Thank you."
Miles's voice was gentle and attentive. "You don't need to be so polite with me."
"You start back at work on Monday. Will your mother be okay?"
Gillian nodded. "Yes."

After hanging up the phone.
Gillian stared at the screen, lost in thought for a long time.
She needed to find a way to make extra money. Aside from Eastwood Memorial, her father used to own another facility: a specialized orthopedic hospital.
She held dual doctorates in medicine—one in gynecology, the other in orthopedics.
While switching departments was akin to changing entirely different careers for most medical students, Gillian had mastered both.
She swiped through her phone and finally dialed Evelyn's number.
"Gillian, you finally called! I've been worried sick about you lately. York wouldn't let me visit you or tell me where you were, and you weren't answering my calls. I was so anxious."
Evelyn asked, "How is your mother doing now? York mentioned the surgery was a success."
"She's doing well," Gillian said, pressing her lips together. "Evelyn, there's something I want to discuss with you."
"I want the operational rights to Mercy General Hospital."
Ever since her father was imprisoned and the Jordan family fell from grace, the Foster family had taken over all their hospitals and corporate medical projects.
