It was a fact that York was married.
But having someone point right at her face and call her a homewrecker was more than she could handle.
Gritting her teeth, she spat, "York will divorce that washed-up woman sooner or later. I've said it before: in love, the one who isn't loved is the real third wheel. I'll be his rightful wife."
Gillian couldn't listen to another word, nor did she want to stick around to watch York inevitably rush to Hailey's defense. She had lived through this circus too many times and was thoroughly exhausted.
"Let's go, Xavier. Let's not waste our time on irrelevant people. I'm buying you dinner."
With that, she grabbed Xavier by the arm and walked out.
As they brushed past York, she didn't even spare him a glance.
York's gaze turned dangerously dark, but Gillian didn't care. Managing his temper was no longer her job.
"York, Gillian is incredible. Miles already has a fiancée, and now she's wrapped up with Mr. Sterling..."
Hailey continued, "Do all men just love stunning, unapproachable women like her?"
"She's bland and tasteless," York replied, his tone icy and detached. "I don't like her."
The exchange drifted into Gillian's ears, but she felt absolutely nothing.
Gillian looked up at Xavier with an apologetic smile. "I dragged you into my mess again. Now you're getting yelled at too."
"Words don't hurt me," Xavier said smoothly. "Besides, being caught in a scandal with you isn't exactly a loss for me."
"Are you looking for a used car?"
Xavier asked suddenly.
When he first walked into her office, he had caught a glimpse of her illuminated phone screen, showing a used car dealer's social media feed.
Gillian paused, then nodded.
"I have a car I don't drive. Want to buy it?" Xavier asked.
Gillian chuckled. "Your cars, even used, are worth a fortune. I could never afford one."
Xavier grinned. "It's an older model from over a decade ago. I'll sell it to you for seven thousand dollars. It was my very first car. It holds sentimental value."
"Want to come over to my place and check it out?"
"Is that convenient for you?"
