Gillian's heart skipped a beat.
As the months went by, the truth about her miscarriage would inevitably come to light. She couldn't hide it forever.
She brushed York's hand away and took a cautious step back.
Lowering her eyes, she murmured, "The embryo is barely developed. You won't see a bump until at least the three-month mark. Besides, some women just don't show that early."
York frowned slightly, studying her guarded expression, but he didn't push the issue.
-
After breakfast.
Gillian accompanied York to Blackwood Penitentiary to visit her father.
Her father was overjoyed to see her, but as they spoke, it became painfully obvious that his mental state was rapidly deteriorating.
She desperately tried to soothe him, assuring him that everything in the news was just vicious gossip and that her mother was completely fine.
But long after the visit ended, even as she climbed into York's car, all she could see was her father's terrified, paranoid expression. He felt profoundly unsafe, his spirit visibly crumbling.
York turned on the heat as soon as they were in the car, rapidly warming the chilly interior.
He didn't bother asking how the visit went. Instead, he simply suggested, "Should I take you shopping for some new clothes?"
Gillian gave a slight shake of her head. "No, thank you."
The man's lips curled into a faint smile as he shot her a mild glance. "Still trying to keep your distance from me, aren't you?"
She scrambled for an excuse. "I'm just a bit exhausted today."
She had no desire to let him close again. She flat-out refused to fall for his fabricated tenderness.
The man's hand rested casually on the steering wheel. His fingers were long and elegant, the veins prominent against his skin as his index finger tapped a slow, rhythmic beat against the leather.
"Then we'll go to the hospital for a checkup," York announced. "We need to see how the baby is doing."
Gillian's eyelashes fluttered in panic, and she quickly turned to him. "I'm an obstetrician. I know exactly what I'm doing. The baby is perfectly fine. It's actually unsafe to do too many tests this early on. Excessive scans and procedures can be harmful."
