She had to admit... this man was an incredible actor.
He always managed to create the devastating illusion that he was madly in love with her. Yet his actual actions were nothing but cold and ruthless, every single one of them screaming that she meant nothing to him and that his heart belonged to someone else...
Another man stood up, raising his glass toward them.
"I had a custom silver rattle made for the baby, and I ordered a bunch of little outfits too—some for a boy, some for a girl. Make sure you take them home tonight."
Looking at the pile of adorable baby gifts, York's face broke into an incredibly bright, genuine smile. "That's very thoughtful of you."
It was painfully obvious how much he genuinely loved children.
Gillian kept her eyes on him as he laughed and chatted effortlessly with his circle.
She listened as he enthusiastically debated which kindergarten the baby should attend, which prep schools were the best, and what careers they might pursue when they grew up...
A strange, suffocating tightness wrapped around her chest. It was a bizarre emotion, impossible to untangle or explain.
Did he genuinely love children, or did he specifically love *their* child?
Gillian honestly couldn't tell anymore...
Being fully accepted into his social circle was something she had once desperately dreamed of.
Now that she was actually sitting here, it all felt surreal. A dream coming true at the absolute worst possible time was nothing but a brutal form of torture.
Her heart was clamped in a vice.
The gathering wrapped up at eleven o'clock.
York was the one who called it. "My wife is pregnant, so she can't stay up late. We're calling it a night."
High on the celebratory mood, he had drank quite a bit. He was entirely flushed, reeking of alcohol, and completely wasted.
This was the first time Gillian had ever seen tangible proof of how much he wanted a child. Before tonight, she genuinely believed he couldn't care less.
His friends thoughtfully asked, "Do you want us to drive you back? You shouldn't be driving while pregnant, and York is totally smashed."
