Those words made Gillian's throat go completely dry. He was drunk, and once again, he was mistaking her for Hailey.
No matter how many times it happened, hearing him call her 'wife' and beg her not to leave in his drunken stupor always made her heart clench violently.
Especially when his tone sounded so devastatingly pitiful and desperate.
She knew perfectly well he wasn't calling out to her.
And because of that, every single time he did this, it felt like a knife twisting in her chest.
He loved Hailey so much that she was the only one on his mind when he lost control.
Gillian's heart bled. She wanted nothing more than to drop him right there and walk out the door.
But if she didn't humor him, he wouldn't let go, and she simply didn't have the physical strength to pry herself free.
So, she gently patted his hand and spoke with forced patience. "Yes, I love you. I'm not leaving. I'm just going to the kitchen to make you a hangover remedy. Let go, and I'll be right back."
She continued to soothe him with a soft voice until York finally, reluctantly, loosened his grip, allowing Gillian to head into the kitchen.
But clearly terrified she would vanish, his tall frame stumbled up from the couch. Swaying on his feet, he trailed heavily behind her all the way to the kitchen.
A wave of bitterness hit Gillian. She glanced at him. "Go lie down. I'm not leaving."
After a few more minutes of coaxing, he finally stumbled back to the sofa. But even as he lay down, his intense, heavy gaze remained locked onto her, refusing to let her out of his sight.
Gillian realized she was trapped until he finally passed out.
She began preparing the remedy.
In the past, over countless late nights when he came home wasted from business dinners, she had stood in this exact kitchen making him the exact same drink.
But back then, he was a quiet drunk.
He never caused a scene. He would just fall into a deep, silent sleep. No talking, no fussing.
Occasionally, he would pull her into his arms, holding her tightly as if drawing some kind of energy from her presence.
