"Be good. Let me handle this," York murmured comfortingly.
When a man truly loved a woman, he wouldn't let her suffer even the slightest bit of humiliation.
Hailey felt a thrill of victory, yet she was still thoroughly annoyed.
Today was supposed to be the day she met his parents, but Gillian had ruined everything the moment she showed up.
She was entirely convinced that Gillian was deliberately targeting her.
Despite the resentment burning in her chest, Hailey allowed York to send her away.
After she left.
The atmosphere in the main hall was thick with tension.
Gillian stood up, breaking the heavy silence. "Evelyn, since Beatrice is resting and fine, I'll head out. I still have work."
Evelyn grabbed her hand. "Don't blame me for tricking you into coming today. Were you really just going to swallow your pride while that homewrecker marched in here like she owned the place? I couldn't stand watching it happen."
Gillian's throat tightened as a suffocating wave of sorrow washed over her. She was used to it by now—used to York protecting Hailey at every turn.
So what if he brought her back to the estate to meet his parents?
"Evelyn," Gillian said, her voice slightly raspy. "He and I are getting a divorce. If you don't believe me, ask him."
She took a deep breath. "I'm leaving now."
Gillian turned and walked out.
Evelyn shot York a freezing glare. "Is what Gillian said true?"
York didn't answer his mother. Instead, he spun on his heel and followed Gillian out.
Gillian walked fast. By the time York made it outside, he only caught a glimpse of her taillights disappearing down the driveway.
He frowned, standing by his car as he lit a cigarette.
The sky in the distance began to darken, signaling an impending storm. York stared at the rolling clouds, exhaled a plume of smoke, crushed the cigarette under his shoe, and drove off.
