Being stuck overseas meant she was entirely out of sight and out of mind. How could she possibly keep tabs on what they were doing behind her back?
York exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, staring at her with chilling indifference.
That lifeless gaze sent a violent shiver down her spine.
Hailey's chest tightened in panic.
She quickly lowered her eyes, adopting a pitiful, fragile demeanor. "I just think the prospects for studying locally are just as good. Being abroad means I'm so far away from you, and I miss you all the time..."
"Besides, I have absolutely no idea when you're finally going to divorce Gillian, and it leaves me constantly on edge... I can barely sleep at night over there. I don't have any friends or connections, and the isolation is just unbearable."
"I really just want to stay by your side."
York kept the cigarette clamped between his lips and glanced down at his phone, his voice flat but laced with undeniable irritation. "Go back abroad, or we are done. Pick one."
He was entirely ruthless and detached.
Hailey's face turned ghastly pale, feeling as though the blood had frozen in her veins. For a split second, she thought she had misheard him.
She clenched her fists so tightly her nails nearly pierced her skin.
Just then, Julian Thorne pulled the car up to the curb and stepped out. "Miss Sinclair, the driver is here to take you home. Please get in."
A sharp pain pierced Hailey's heart, followed by a surge of overwhelming resentment.
Why did Secretary Thorne respectfully call Gillian 'Mrs. Foster' but address her merely as 'Miss Sinclair'?
"Okay," Hailey swallowed her humiliation and looked up at York. "I'll be good, York."
He finally looked at her, his lips curving slightly. He reached out and patted her head, offering a rare moment of comfort. "Hailey, being out there builds your independence and capabilities. Stop constantly looking for excuses to run back. Focus on your studies."
-
After York and Hailey departed.
Xavier smiled across the table at Mr. Conrad. "You flatter her, Mr. Conrad. I merely made the introduction. The fact that you see her potential is entirely based on your own excellent judgment."
"Sometimes a saturated industry desperately needs fresh blood," Mr. Conrad replied. "Us old dinosaurs need to embrace the innovations of the younger generation. I appreciate young people who actually know how to execute."
"Gillian Jordan, was it?"
