If he found out the baby was already gone, he would completely lose his mind.
Ever since York found out she was pregnant, his entire attitude had shifted.
He was fiercely protective of the child, and by extension, treated her better. She could tell that even when his patience wore thin, he'd force down his temper to coax her.
That was, until Hailey Sinclair returned. Then it had all stopped abruptly.
Xavier chuckled over the phone. "You've orchestrated this bluff perfectly. A dangerous game. But it sounds like I need to expedite your father's release before your little secret blows up in your face."
"Yes," Gillian replied, forcing a bitter smile.
She had no other leverage. This nonexistent baby was her one and only trump card.
At the very least, York wasn't entirely indifferent to her. She still possessed something he desperately wanted.

Gillian ultimately decided to go to Eastwood Memorial Hospital.
She had a friend in the obstetrics department there who could help her cover up the lie.
Over in the inpatient ward, Chloe Langdon happened to be working the night shift.
"When York gets here, if he asks about the baby..." Gillian briefed Chloe.
Chloe smiled reassuringly. "Relax, I know exactly what to say. Don't worry."
"I'll tell him the baby is perfectly fine."
Gillian looked at her with immense gratitude. "Thank you for helping me."
"We're colleagues and friends. What are you thanking me for?"
Chloe looked at her sympathetically. "It's just a shame you're stuck with a husband like him, and you still can't get a divorce... When is this nightmare going to end for you? Seeing Hailey Sinclair strutting around makes me sick."
"I honestly don't know how you can stomach it."
Gillian lay in the hospital bed, turning her head to stare out into the endless night. "Things will get better."
