Hailey was hooked up to an IV drip, lying in bed with a pale face.

"York, is the baby in my tummy going to be..."

"No." The man's voice was firm yet tender as he affectionately ruffled the young woman's hair. "Don't overthink it."

Watching them, a sharp ache settled in the bottom of her heart. She should have been used to York's devotion to Hailey by now.

But every time she witnessed it, the emotions were beyond her control. Like thorny vines, they coiled tightly around her heart, leaving behind a chaotic, stinging mess.

Hailey bit her lip and looked up, spotting Gillian. She offered a weak smile. "Gillian, you're here?"

Dressed in her white coat, Gillian looked slender and delicate, but her face remained cool and expressionless. She walked up to Hailey, asked exactly where it hurt, and began to gently palpate the girl's abdomen.

No matter where she pressed, Hailey cried out in pain.

Between her cries, she clung to York's hand, looking pitiful enough to break anyone's heart.

She retracted her hand and stood up straight. "If you feel pain at every single point I press, then the only option is to do an MRI to rule out certain conditions."

Gillian looked at Hailey with an impassive gaze. "I'm sure you know that an MRI carries risks for the fetus. But if you have some sort of malignant tumor in there, continuing the pregnancy would be ill-advised. It could cost you your life."

Hailey's face instantly drained of color, clearly terrified by Gillian's clinical assessment.

York frowned heavily, shooting Gillian a dark look. "What kind of attitude is that?"

He was hurting for his lover again.

Gillian suppressed a sigh and smiled at York. "Dr. Sinclair is well aware of the medical stakes. I don't need to elaborate."

She then turned her attention back to Hailey. "I'm going to examine you one more time. Try to be precise about what you feel."

Hailey nodded, looking wronged. "Then please be gentle, Gillian."
