Gillian's brow furrowed slightly.
This was a restaurant Miles had booked at the last minute, and they were seated in the main dining area, not a private room. She hadn't expected to run into the two of them here of all places.
"Gillian, I didn't realize your husband treated you so terribly..." Hailey's eyes filled with faux sympathy. "I'm sorry about earlier today. I didn't know you were in the middle of a messy divorce. If I had known you were in such a bad mood, I wouldn't have said those things to you..."
Xavier shot Hailey a flat glance. He picked up his teacup and took a slow, unbothered sip. "I would have thought a mistress would have the self-awareness not to parade around in public. I suppose shamelessness really knows no bounds."
Hailey's face fell. Clinging to York's arm, she bit her lip and retorted, "York promised he'd divorce his miserable shrew of a wife."
"They lost their feelings for each other a long time ago. It's the wife at home who's aggressively clinging to the assets, refusing to sign the papers."
Gillian's breath hitched. So this was the lie York had spun for Hailey. It felt as if an invisible hand had violently squeezed her heart, sending a suffocating wave of dull pain radiating through her bones.
Xavier's expression remained icy. He set his teacup down with a sharp clink and let out a disdainful scoff. "Doesn't that still make you a mistress? Until the legal wife is gone, you're nothing but a dirty little secret who can't see the light of day."
Hailey's face flushed crimson. Looking utterly humiliated, she trembled as if she were about to shatter into pieces.
"Mr. Sterling," York warned, his gaze turning predatory as he shielded Hailey. "It's not your place to judge my girlfriend."
Miles chimed in with a pleasant, yet calculated tone. "Dr. Sinclair, you just got your job back. It might be wise to keep a low profile. If the hospital staff finds out you're the other woman, what would they think of you?"
It was a naked threat.
Hailey looked profoundly mortified.
"Gillian, do you also think I'm a shameless mistress?"
Gillian's voice was remarkably calm. "Dr. Sinclair, self-awareness is a rare virtue."
York furrowed his brows, his eyes growing so dark and stormy they seemed ready to pour rain.
