Gillian lowered her eyes, refusing to utter another word.
There was no point in arguing.
She and York couldn't hold a single conversation without it devolving into a vicious fight.
Their marriage was a shattered, grotesque mess, yet she found it incredibly pathetic that she had single-handedly dragged it along for five grueling years, foolishly hoping he would eventually love her.
Her silence only infuriated him further. A frosty edge hardened his features as he let out a cold laugh. "So you can't even be bothered to speak to me now?"
"Gillian, you have no right to demand a divorce. Without my signature, you won't get a damn thing!"
York stared her down, his voice cutting like a glacier. "Even if Xavier Sterling himself takes your case, it won't make a difference!"
Dropping that chilling ultimatum, he turned and stormed out.
Gillian shuddered uncontrollably.
She knew perfectly well the immense weight behind his threat.
He despised her to the point where he would rather drag her into an abyss than let her go...
She took a deep, jagged breath, a sharp ache radiating through her entire body.

That night, Gillian called Chloe Langdon to come over and examine her privately.
Chloe looked extremely serious. "Given your physical condition, I'm sure you know the risks better than anyone..."
"I'm fine," Gillian replied flatly. "I just wanted you to bring me some prenatal supplements."
"You're still in your first trimester, which is risky enough as it is. But your fetal baseline is incredibly weak. Working at the hospital is high stress, not to mention the night shifts. I strongly recommend you take a leave of absence to rest."
Chloe stared at her earnestly. "You're a doctor. You can't gamble with your own body like this."
"I know," Gillian met Chloe's gaze. "But I absolutely cannot give up my job right now."
