Valery replied without hesitation, "How much do you need? I'll wire it to you right now."
"You can't cover this," Gillian said quietly. She briefly explained why she needed the cash so desperately, then sent over a photo of her wedding ring. "Find a buyer. It's urgent. I'll let it go below market value."
"Done."
Ending the call, Gillian let out a long, shaky exhale.
She stared at the ring in her hand, a bitter smile twisting her lips.
Five years of marriage, and this single piece of jewelry was the only thing from the Foster family that truly belonged to her.
She sat in the waiting area for a while, the sickening ache in her stomach growing worse by the minute.
Gillian gripped the armrest and forced herself up, needing to check if the match results were back.
"Gillian, are you here to see your mother again?"
Hailey's voice drifted over. She was supporting her father. By pure coincidence, after his last checkup, Arthur Sinclair had suffered a blinding headache at home and nearly passed out. Panicked, Rose had called Hailey, who skipped work to rush him to the hospital.
"Mom, take Dad to the lounge to rest. I'm going to catch up with her for a minute."
Once Rose led Arthur away, Hailey turned her attention back.
Gillian had zero patience for her games and slowly continued walking down the hall.
Hailey jogged over and grabbed her arm. "Gillian, you look awful. Is it because of the online backlash, or did your mom have another episode?"
She feigned deep concern. "Is your husband really just abandoning you right now?"
"Then again, given your family's situation... any man would view you as a massive burden."
Gillian wrenched her arm free, staring at Hailey with dead eyes. "My family is none of your damn business."
"Gillian... I'm just worried about you," Hailey said, looking like a kicked puppy. "Don't be mad. I won't say another word."
Gillian's face was ashen, her expression hard. She ignored Hailey entirely and kept walking, her steps slightly unsteady.
"Let me help you," Hailey pressed, following her and reaching out again. "I'm really sorry. I didn't mean it."
"Get the hell off me."
Hailey froze, her eyes instantly welling with tears. "Gillian, I'm just trying to help. I'm worried about you. Aren't we friends?"
