Chapter 266 What The Bloodline Meant

Lady Flourish POV

The lights went out.

For a few seconds, nobody moved. The howl from beneath the records wing had already stopped, leaving only the sound of warriors shifting their feet and the low growl coming from Harold’s wolf.

Then emergency lights came on.

Harold was standing over Voss with two warriors on either side of him. Voss had been disarmed and was now on his knees, his hands secured behind his back.

They moved him from the records wing before the passage could be opened again. Harold had ordered the area sealed, and the guards took Voss to the secure western wing, where the walls carried ward lines and the doors required Alpha access.

I followed because I wasn’t willing to let anyone else question him first. Rhys stayed outside with the guards while Harold remained inside the room with us. Voss sat across from me at a table, restrained, while the panel beside the door showed that the exits were locked.

“What did you mean by announcement?”

Voss looked at me.

His eyes moved over my face before settling on the faint mark glowing beneath my feet.

“The same thing I said.”

“Then explain it.”

Harold glanced at me. “Flourish, you don’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I do.”

I looked at Voss again.

“You’ve sent wolves into my home. You’ve attacked Stonehedge, breached F-Tech, searched our records, and sent people after me because of blood I never asked to carry. So you’re going to tell me exactly what you think that blood gives you.”

Voss didn’t answer immediately.

One of the guards tightened his grip on his shoulder.

“Let him speak,” I said.

Voss straightened.

“The Eastern Army has waited a long time for this.”

“I don’t care how long you’ve waited.”

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the reason they came.”

My wolf pushed forward beneath my skin.

“Don’t talk about me as if I’m a thing you found.”

Voss’s expression barely changed.

“I don’t see you as a thing.”

“Then stop speaking like I’m some missing piece of your pack.”

“You don’t understand what your blood represents.”

“I understand enough. You think it belongs to you.”

“No.”

His answer came quietly.

“We believe it belongs to something older than any of us.”

I folded my arms.

“That’s not better.”

Voss looked toward the floor.

“The Eastern Army descends from wolves who were directly bound to the First Alpha’s line. Their authority came through that bond. They served under the First Alpha and were given territories, ranks, and protection.”

“And then?”

“The First Alpha line disappeared.”

I said nothing.

“When that happened, the old structure broke. The Eastern wolves lost the authority that had been recognized through the bloodline. Their leaders were forced beneath newer pack systems. Their territories were divided. Their titles became meaningless.”

“That sounds like a history problem.”

“It became a family problem.”

“Not mine.”

Voss’s gaze returned to me.

“For generations, they believed the bloodline would return.”

“And now you think I’m it.”

“We know you are.”

I laughed once, without humor.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“We tested your blood tonight.”

The memory of the device on the attacker’s collar came back immediately.

My hands tightened.

“You didn’t steal it.”

“No.”

“You only confirmed it.”

“Yes.”

“So the transfer protocol wasn’t about taking my blood.”

“Not tonight.”

Harold stepped forward.

“What exactly happens next?”

Voss looked at him.

“That depends on her.”

I turned sharply.

“Don’t put that on me.”

“The Eastern Army believes you can restore what was taken from them.”

“I can’t restore anything for you.”

“You can.”

“I won’t.”

His expression hardened for the first time.

“You cannot simply reject an obligation because you were born into a different time.”

“I can reject anything I want.”

“You carry a bloodline that predates Stonehedge’s current charter.”

“And?”

“It means the authority connected to that bloodline was never erased.”

I shook my head.

“My blood doesn’t make me your leader. It doesn’t make me your savior, and it certainly doesn’t make me anyone’s property.”

“No one said property.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Voss looked at me for several seconds.

“The old obligations were never written for people like you.”

“People like me?”

“People who were raised outside the old system.”

“Good.”

I took a step toward him.

“Because I have no intention of living by rules written before my family even knew what modern pack law looked like.”

His jaw tightened.

“You think the old laws disappeared because the packs changed their names and wrote new charters?”

“I think nobody gets to decide my life because of something in my veins.”

“You may not get that choice.”

Harold moved between us.

“Careful.”

Voss didn’t look away from me.

“The Eastern Army has waited decades for the bloodline to resurface. Some of them believe you are the only person alive who can restore their authority.”

“And what do you believe?”

He paused.

“I believe the bloodline has obligations.”

“To whom?”

“To the packs that were bound to it.”

I shook my head.

“You’ve got the wrong woman.”

Voss gave a small breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

“That is what you keep telling yourself.”

The floor suddenly warmed beneath my boots.

I stopped.

A faint line appeared between the stones.
