Chapter 290 Lila’s Spite
Lady Flourish POV
I had barely returned to my office after speaking to Eugene when my phone rang again.
Lila.
I answered.
“Hey.”
There was silence on the other end.
Then I heard her breathe in.
“Flourish?”
“I’m here. What happened?”
“I need you.”
The words came out so quietly that I stopped what I was doing.
“Where are you?”
“My apartment.”
“I’ll come.”

I found her sitting on the floor beside her sofa when I arrived. Her hair was loose, her eyes were swollen, and there was a half-empty glass of water on the table.
She looked up at me.
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize.”
I sat beside her.
For a while, she said nothing.
Then she wiped her face with both hands.
“I hate my mother.”

I didn’t answer immediately.
“What happened?”
“She was talking about Dad again.”
Her voice cracked.
“Actually, no. She wasn’t talking about him. That’s the problem.”
Lila looked toward the window.
“She said she doesn’t understand why I still act like Dad’s death happened yesterday. Then she started talking about her new husband and how I should be happy for her.”
I listened.
“That’s the fourth one,” she whispered.
I knew what she meant.
“Since your father?”
“Since Dad.”
She laughed bitterly.
“She keeps getting married. Every few years, there’s another man, another house, another set of people calling me family. And whenever I say anything about Dad, she acts like I’m the one refusing to move on.”
She pulled her knees closer.
“I don’t care that she wants to be happy. I just hate that she keeps replacing everything.”
“She isn’t replacing him.”
“It feels like she is.”
I understood that better than I wanted to admit.
Parents could make choices for themselves without realizing how those choices looked from the child’s side. Lila had spent years watching her mother’s life change while her own
memories stayed exactly where they were.
“Did you tell her that?”

“I tried.”
“And?”
“She said I was being dramatic.”
I reached for her hand.
“You’re allowed to miss your father.”
“I know.”
“You’re also allowed to be angry.”
She looked at me.
“Even if I’m angry at my mother?”
“Especially then.”
Her eyes filled again.
I stayed with her until she stopped crying.
I didn’t tell her to forgive Selina. I didn’t tell her that her mother meant well. There were some things a person had to work through without someone else deciding what the correct feeling should be.
A few days later, Lila called me again.
This time, she sounded almost cheerful.
“I said yes.”
I was sitting at my desk.
“To what?”
“Julian.”
I put my pen down.
“Julian Hale?”
“Yes.”

I stared at the wall.
“You’re marrying Julian?”
“I am.”
I waited.
“Are you sure?”
“Very.”
That answer came too quickly.
“Lila.”
“What?”
“Do you actually want to marry him?”
There was a pause.
“I think so.”
That wasn’t convincing.
Before I could ask anything else, there was a knock on my office door.
Cheryl walked in.
“You have a visitor.”
“Who?”
She looked amused.
“Julian Hale.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.

He walked in a moment later wearing a suit that looked far too expensive for someone who had apparently decided to announce his wedding plans without warning.
He grinned when he saw me.

“Flourish.”
“Julian.”
“You’ve heard.”
“I have.”
He dropped into the chair opposite me.
“Lila’s finally agreed to marry me.”
“That’s what she said.”
“Good.”
I folded my arms.
“Does she know what she’s agreed to?”
He laughed.
“She’ll find out.”
I stared at him.
He raised both hands.
“I’m joking.”
“I hope so.”
Before he could say anything else, his phone started ringing.
He glanced at it.
“That’s probably the family group.”
He answered.
“Hello?”
His smile widened.
“Yes, we’re getting married.”
I could hear several voices coming through the speaker.

Julian laughed.
“Of course I slept with her. Why else would she agree to marry me?”
My mouth dropped open.
He continued, completely shameless.
“Yes, she tried to kill me afterward.”
I covered my face.
“Julian.”
He ignored me.
“I’m making an honest woman out of her.”
I reached across the desk and took the phone from his hand.
“You’re going to get yourself killed.”
He laughed.
“Probably.”
I ended the call.
“You are impossible.”
“She’s marrying me anyway.”
“That doesn’t mean she won’t change her mind.”
“She won’t.”
He said it with such confidence that I almost believed him.
Almost.
After he left, I called Lila.
“Did you tell Julian to announce your private business to everyone?”
“No.”

“Then why is he doing it?”
“Because he’s Julian.”
I laughed despite myself.
There was a pause.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why did you say yes?”
She didn’t answer.
“Lila.”
“I want to get away from all of this.”
I leaned back.
“From your mother?”
“From everyone.”
“That isn’t the same as wanting Julian.”
“I know.”
Her voice softened.
