Chapter 293 Harold’s Visit
Alpha Harold POV
The flight had been longer than I expected, although I had spent most of it staring at the same few messages on my phone.
Phina had sent me the hotel details twice, along with a reminder that she would be waiting when I arrived.
I had agreed to come the following week because refusing over the phone had seemed unnecessarily harsh.
Now that I was actually there, I wished I had found another excuse.
My wolf had been quiet for most of the flight. As the plane descended, he finally stirred.
“I don’t like this.”
“Neither do I.”
The airport was busy, and I moved through it with my security detail before heading to the hotel. I had barely spoken to anyone since landing. My mind kept returning to the call with Phina and the strange way she had asked me to come.
When I reached her room, she opened the door almost immediately.
For a second, I just stared.
She had dressed the way she used to when our marriage was still new.
Her hair was styled neatly, she wore the perfume I remembered, and even her clothes looked chosen with care. It was not how she usually looked when we met these days.
“You came,” she said.
“I said I would.”
She smiled and stepped aside.
“I know. I just wasn’t sure you would change your mind.”
I walked in.
The room was warm, clean, and filled with the smell of food. A table had been prepared near the window.
There were two plates, two glasses, and a bottle of wine opened.
I noticed the details because Phina had never been this organized about a meeting between us. She had even chosen the kind of food we used to order when we were newly married.
“You planned all this?”
“I wanted tonight to be nice.”
“It is.”
She studied my face for a moment.
“You don’t sound convinced.”
“I just got here.”
She nodded and moved toward the table, smoothing the front of her dress before sitting down.
“You cooked?”
“I ordered.”
“That sounds more like you.”
She laughed.
“I’ve missed you.”
I didn’t answer.
She came closer and touched my arm.
“You look tired.”
“It was a long flight.”
“You should eat.”
She was attentive in a way I hadn’t experienced from her in months.
Every question sounded normal, but there were too many of them, and she seemed to be watching for an answer each time. She asked about the trip, my pack, Magnus, and the tribunal. She listened without interrupting and refilled my glass before I needed to ask.
I noticed every bit of it. The problem was that I couldn’t figure out why she was doing it.
“You seem different,” I said eventually.
Her smile weakened.
“Is that bad?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You’re looking at me like you don’t recognize me.”
“I recognize you.”
She looked down at her plate.
“I’ve been thinking about us.”
I leaned back.
“About what?”
“How lonely I’ve been.”
She said it softly, almost casually.
“I spend most days alone. You have your responsibilities. I have mine. Sometimes I feel like I’ve lost the person I used to be.”
I listened.
She reached across the table and took my hand.
“I’ve missed being close to you.”
My wolf immediately became alert.
“Something is wrong.”
I didn’t move my hand.
Phina continued talking about the past, about our first months together and the way things had felt before everything between us became difficult. She remembered small things I had forgotten.
I answered when necessary, but I didn’t let myself get pulled into the conversation.
The scent reached me again.
It was faint.
I had noticed it when I first entered the room, but I had assumed it belonged to the hotel, her clothes, or someone who had passed through the corridor. Now it was stronger.
It wasn’t her scent.
It wasn’t mine.
I looked toward the door.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She watched me.
“You’ve gone quiet.”
“I’m tired.”
She smiled again.
“You always say that when you don’t want to talk.”
