Chapter 305 The Pack That Disappeared

My hand had barely reached my phone when Rhys finished decrypting the distress signal.

“They found us.”

The words remained on the screen.

I looked at Flourish. She was moving toward the estate exit, pulling her jacket over her shoulders.

Her female wolf had gone quiet after the message, and mine was focused on the same thing that had caught my attention.

The signal had come from Grey Ridge.

“Who’s going?” I asked.

“Six warriors,” Rhys said. “No more. If the territory is under attack, I don’t want to leave the estate exposed.”

“I’ll take four.”

Flourish stepped closer. “I’m coming.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Damian.”

“You don’t know what we’re walking into.”

“And you do?”

That stopped me for a second.

She was right. We had spent too much time reacting to enemies who knew more about our movements than we knew about theirs.

Sending her into another unknown territory was dangerous, but leaving her behind without knowing what was happening was not better.

“I’ll stay with the team,” she said. “I won’t get in your way.”

I looked at Rhys.

He gave a small shrug. “She’s coming whether you agree or not.”

Flourish gave him a look.

We left soon.

The drive to Grey Ridge took less than an hour in one of Dartwood’s security vehicles. The road was empty as we approached the territory.

There were no patrol vehicles at the outer boundary, no guards at the main checkpoint, and no wolves waiting for us.

That was the first thing that felt wrong.

Grey Ridge should have had at least two warriors at the gate at all times.

Ragnar’s report had mentioned the territory many times over the years. It was not one of the largest packs, but it had enough wolves to maintain border security.

Now the gate stood open.

I got out first.

The air smelled wrong.

I caught the scent of fear before we reached the first row of houses. It was old, but strong enough to linger in the soil and walls. Beneath it was the smell of blood.

There was also something else.

My wolf lifted his head.

“Forced shift.”

I smelled it too.

Wolves had shifted here against their will.

I raised a hand, and the team spread out.

“Check every building,” I ordered. “Stay linked. If you find anyone, call me before them.”

Flourish followed close behind me.

The first house had a front door hanging open. Inside, a dining table was still set. Plates sat beside an overturned glass. A phone was charging on the kitchen counter.

Someone had left in a hurry.

The next house was the same.

Clothes remained in wardrobes. Children’s shoes were beside a staircase. A bag of groceries had been abandoned on a counter, some of the food already spoiled.

There were cars in driveways.

Keys were still inside them.

No bodies.

No warriors.

No families.

Grey Ridge had not been destroyed.

It had simply been completely emptied.

We moved farther into the territory, checking houses one after another. The silence made it difficult to tell how much time had passed since the pack disappeared.

Then I noticed blood on the floor of a house near the eastern side.

I crouched and touched two fingers to it.

Fresh enough to matter.

“Damian.”

One of the warriors called from behind the house.

I stood and followed him.

“There’s a scent trail.”

It led beneath the building.

The warrior pointed toward a loose wooden panel near the foundation.

I dropped to one knee and pulled it aside.

“Come out,” I said. “We’re not here to hurt you.”

Nothing happened.

I could hear breathing.

Seconds later, a girl crawled out from beneath the house.

She looked about sixteen or seventeen. Her clothes were dirty, one sleeve was torn, and there was dried blood along her cheek. Her wolf was frightened enough that I could sense her panic without trying.

Flourish crouched beside me.

“You’re safe,” she said gently. “Can you tell us your name?”

The girl swallowed.

“Mara.”

“Where is your pack?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“They took them.”

My jaw tightened.

“Who?”

“Wolves with guns.”

I exchanged a look with Rhys.

“Before dawn,” Mara continued. “They came through the road. There were too many of them. Our warriors tried to stop them.”

“What happened?”

“They had weapons that could hurt wolves even after shifting.”

Silver.

Possibly treated rounds.

I kept my voice calm. “Did they kill anyone?”

Mara shook her head.

“No. They made everyone shift.’

Her hands began trembling.

“They forced them outside. If anyone fought, they hit them or used those weapons. They kept saying they didn’t want dead bodies.”

That changed everything.

Until then, I had assumed Voss was removing opposition the same way he had dealt with the wolves who refused to kneel.

Execution.

Fear.

Control through death.

But Grey Ridge had no bodies.

“They took them alive,” I said.

Mara nodded.

“They loaded them into trucks.”

“How many attackers?”

“I don’t know. Maybe twenty. Maybe more.”

“Did you see anything that identified them?”

She hesitated.

“Silver.”

I waited.

“On their clothes. A symbol. It looked like the one on the wall in the house.”

My wolf reacted before I could.

The same symbol.
