But she felt in her gut that it couldn't possibly be this simple.
"Thank you for your hard work, Officer."
She picked up her receipt, stood up, and walked out of the police station.
The midday sun beamed down from above, forcing her to squint against the glare.
Lily followed closely behind, rushing down the steps to catch up.
"That's it? The case is just closed?"
Sienna paused on the steps, watching the steady stream of traffic across the street.
"Someone who has the power to get the hospital to send me to Africa, hire hitmen to kill me, and then have the influence to find a scapegoat and sweep everything under the rug afterward... Who do you think could pull that off?"
Lily's face paled.
"Hearing you say it like that, it has to be someone with serious power. Not just your average rich person."
Sienna let out a bitter laugh.
"Why would someone with that much power have it out for a lowly doctor like me? If they couldn't make a move domestically, they went through all the trouble to ship me overseas just to finish the job."
"You pissed someone off," Lily said.
"I've only ever crossed one person who is both wealthy and powerful." Sienna looked at her friend. "So the answer is already staring us in the face. But I can't fight her."
A cold shiver ran down Lily's spine.
"Finn's mother?"
-
Global Air Headquarters.
The conference room was packed to the brim. A red banner hung above the stage, and television cameras were trained on the podium, their red recording lights glaring as the event broadcasted live.
The host read off a lengthy commendation detailing Finn's heroic actions in Africa—how he assisted the medical team, transferred critical patients, and maintained impeccable composure during extreme emergencies to flawlessly execute his flight missions.
Finn had been promoted to Flight Operations Supervisor.
Applause erupted around him. As the cameras panned across the room, everyone was smiling brightly.
Finn knew exactly what this promotion was about. The executives needed a heroic poster boy, and Global Air needed a pristine public image. He just happened to fit the bill perfectly at the right time.
Finn stood up, his left arm still wrapped in a sling, and accepted the certificate with one hand.
Camera flashes went off, making him narrow his eyes.
People beside him clapped, nodded, and offered smiles that didn't quite reach their eyes.
But his mind was entirely consumed by something else.
He was getting very close to finding out who had hurt Sienna.
