Caspar and Henry shared a tense look.
Silas's face darkened drastically.
As he listened to the phone, his fingers slowly curled inward, tightening into a white-knuckled fist.
He hung up the phone and placed it carefully on the desk.
The movement was slight, but his hand brushed the fallen pen, sending it rolling twice before it clattered onto the floor.
The office was deafeningly silent.
The sound of the pen hitting the ground was crystal clear.
Henry nervously cleared his throat.
"Boss?"
"She resigned," Silas said.
"You said she was testing me." Silas's voice dropped into a lethal octave. "Is resigning also a test?"
Caspar's throat went completely dry; he couldn't form a single word.
"Get out," Silas ordered.
Silas was left completely alone in the sprawling office.
He sat there for roughly ten minutes before suddenly springing up, grabbing his car keys, and storming out.
Mercy International.
Sienna's office was completely empty.
The desk had been wiped spotless. The computer keyboard and mouse were perfectly aligned. The patient files were stacked into a neat tower, and her stethoscope was carefully coiled on top. Everything was meticulously arranged, looking as if the room had never been occupied.
Silas stood in the doorway, staring at the barren desk for a very long time.
Marcus jogged over, his face pale, his breaths carefully measured.
"Director Hayes, Dr. Sterling's resignation letter is right here. I didn't approve it! I told her we had to run it through the system... but she just dropped the envelope and walked out. I couldn't stop her."
Silas took the letter. He gripped it so tightly the paper's edge cut lightly into his palm.
"Understood. Get back to work."
Silas hesitated, then deleted the words, one by one.
Lily's apartment.
Sienna was sitting cross-legged on the plush rug, several cans of beer and half a box of fried chicken spread out in front of her.
Lily sat across from her, a beer in hand.
"Bestie, you actually quit? That was an insane job."
Sienna cracked open a fresh beer. Foam bubbled over the rim, and she leaned down to take a sip, her eyes narrowing in pure bliss as the icy liquid slid down her throat.
"I really did. And I have never felt more relieved in my life."
She set the can on the coffee table, tapping her fingernails lightly against the aluminum.
"This whole ordeal taught me a massive lesson. Never force your way into a world that isn't yours. I genuinely cannot date a ruthless businessman like Silas. Every single day he was calculating my worth, acting like every move I made and every word I spoke was a manipulative scheme to extract more resources out of him. It was incredibly exhausting."
Lily nodded in agreement.
"Of course it was, the man is made of money. But hey, not every rich guy is a cold, calculating machine." She paused, shooting Sienna a side-eye. "Look at Finn. His biggest flaw is that he cares way too much. If he didn't, he wouldn't have spent years getting played like a fiddle by his manipulative stepmother and two-faced brother."
