Finn twisted the cap off the water and handed it to her, not pressing for details.
He leaned against the car door, waiting for her to finish drinking before speaking.
"For this kind of interview, your score is pretty much finalized the second you walk out. The judges score you on the spot, and then it's just tallying the rankings and taking the top two. Your written score was high, so your overall score won't be low."
Sienna tilted her head back, took a sip of water, and decided to swallow her concerns about the embroidered logo.
These interviews were scored immediately and entered into the system right away. The process was completely transparent; there wouldn't be any loopholes.
She told herself that maybe she had seen it wrong. Maybe it didn't count as a "special pattern," or perhaps it was just the natural weave of the fabric.
There was no point in obsessing over a phase that was already over.
The next day, the final aggregate scores were released.
Finn parked by the curb and walked with Sienna toward the notice board.
A small crowd had already gathered. Some were taking photos with their phones, some were scrolling through files, some looked entirely relaxed, while others were pale with shock.
Sienna stood on the periphery for a moment, waiting for the crowd to thin out before stepping closer.
A printed spreadsheet was pinned to the board. Black ink on white paper. Six names, written scores, interview scores, and final rankings.
She started from the third row and scanned upward, name by name.
First row: Sasha Beaumont, interview score 94, final rank 1st.
Second row: A name she didn't recognize, interview score 92, final rank 2nd.
Her name was in the fourth row.
Interview score 86, final rank 3rd.
There were only two passing spots.
Which meant she had failed.
Sienna stared at the spreadsheet, reading from the first row to the last, and then reading it all the way back up again.
Finn stood behind her and saw it too. His heart sank, and he instinctively looked at Sienna.
Sienna stood there quietly for about five or six seconds.
Then her gaze slid downward, landing on the small print at the very bottom of the page—
