Sienna could sense that something was very wrong.
But she didn't want to ask in front of Isaac, so she just walked over and linked her arm through Lily's.
“Come on, let me show you to your room.”
Lily didn't pull away as they walked, but the moment Sienna took her arm, she could feel how rigidly stiff Lily's muscles were.
The wind swept through the valley, ringing the wind chimes hanging from the eaves.
The guest room door was open, the afternoon sunlight spilling across the floorboards.
Lily walked inside and quietly shut the door behind them.
Sienna had a sinking feeling she was about to say something serious.
Lily stood with her back to Sienna.
“He used to have a crush on you.”
She turned around, the faint barrier of resentment in her eyes now stark and undeniable.
“I always knew that. I just didn't expect that he would still be in love with you.”
“What are you basing this on?” Sienna asked calmly.
Pain flooded Lily's eyes.
“I saw you two meeting in secret.”
Sienna frowned.
“At Serenity Books. You two talked for so long. The way Isaac looked at you... it was so gentle, so full of admiration. He’s never looked at me like that!” Lily's eyes brimmed with angry red tears.
She buried her face in her hands, collapsing into a crouch on the floor, her shoulders trembling violently as she hugged her knees.
“Lily, you’re misunderstanding,” Sienna stepped forward. “I was investigating a case, and Isaac was helping me gather evidence.”
Lily looked up, devastated.
“Why did he help you? Whenever you need anything, he drops everything to run to your rescue. He’s my husband, but he spends his days obsessing over how to help my best friend! You know exactly what his intentions are, yet you just sit there and accept his help without an ounce of guilt.”
