Finn closed the folder, straightening up, just about to speak.
A sharp voice cut through the room from the doorway.
"Director Davis, I heard every single word you just said through the door."
Maeve stood at the entrance, wearing a sleek charcoal-gray blazer, her hair pulled back into a severe low bun. She radiated absolute, razor-sharp authority.
Her eyes swept over the boardroom, locking onto Director Davis for a split second before she strode in.
Director Davis's smug smile froze instantly.
"Mrs. Thorne, what brings you here?"
"I was running a project meeting next door, and the commotion in here was impossible to ignore." Maeve pulled out the chair next to Finn and sat down. She tossed a file onto the table, pressed her manicured fingers against it, and leveled a lethal glare at the executive. "You just stated that the CEO doesn't understand operations. Tell me, do you think I understand operations?"
Director Davis's mouth twitched. Just last week, he had run into a massive logistical crisis, and Maeve had swooped in and solved it flawlessly, cementing her absolute dominance in the company.
"You must be joking, Mrs. Thorne. Of course you..."
"I ran international medical rescues in Africa and South America. I've negotiated with the healthcare systems of over a dozen countries, managed teams of hundreds, and handled more life-or-death crises in a week than you have seen in twenty years at this desk."
Maeve swept her gaze across the entire room.
"Do you think I have the qualifications to tell you that this operational strategy needs to be gutted?"
Director Davis opened his mouth, then slowly pulled his hands off the table and rested them on his knees in defeat.
"The data is sitting right in front of you. Three consecutive quarters of decline, and you have the audacity to tell me nothing needs to change." Maeve flipped the report open, tapping a manicured nail sharply against the page. "The profit margin on this project plummeted by twelve percent compared to last year, and you're demanding we stick to the status quo. Director Davis, is this about your loyalty to the corporation, or are you just terrified of someone threatening your little empire?"
The air in the boardroom was instantly sucked out.
Director Davis didn't dare say another word.
He kept his head down, aimlessly flipping a page in his report, rubbing his thumb against the paper. When he finally spoke, his arrogance was completely gone.
"You are absolutely right, Mrs. Thorne. I'll review the data immediately."
