Sienna's hands braced against the mattress beside his shoulders. His face was inches from hers, so close she could count his eyelashes and breathe in his intoxicating, crisp woody scent.
The moment the shock wore off, she violently shoved herself upright, ripping her wrist from his grip and stumbling two steps backward.
Her cheeks and ears burned a furious red, but she gritted her teeth, refusing to show a single crack in her armor.
"Are you playing me?"
"No, it really does hurt."
Finn looked at her, his eyes brimming with utter innocence.
How the hell had this man devolved into such a shameless menace?
There wasn't a trace of his former untouchable aura left.
And yet, a horrifying realization hit her—she had used this exact same trick to get close to him years ago.
Sienna was practically shaking with rage, ready to completely blow up at him.
But she bit her tongue. She was a doctor. He was a patient. She couldn't physically assault a patient.
Yet, in that split second when she collapsed against his chest, her heart had hammered out of control.
It felt exactly like it did back when...
No. She absolutely forbade herself from going down that rabbit hole.
"Finn, you have a family, and yet you're pulling these shameless stunts. How can you be such absolute garbage?"
Finn froze, his lips parting in shock.
Sienna didn't let him speak. She pointed a trembling finger at him.
"Years ago, you cheated on me and completely blindsided me with a breakup. What? Are you bored now? Coming back to me because you want me to be your dirty little mistress?"
All the blood drained from Finn's face.
A suffocating wave of despair crashed over him.
It felt like a knife had been driven straight into his heart.
His lips began to tremble.
"No." His voice was barely a whisper, a desperate plea. "No, it's not like that. I have never, ever thought that way. Please don't degrade yourself like that."
If he could, he would have ripped his own chest open just to prove his sincerity to her.
"How could I ever do that to you? You're misunderstanding everything. Please, let me explain."
"Chloe and I are not legally married, and we never had a wedding. You saw it yourself—my marital status on file isn't fake. The only reason my mother beat me like this is because she was forcing me to marry Chloe on June 18th, and I flat-out refused. I will absolutely never marry anyone else."
He spilled the words out in one frantic breath, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply.
He instinctively stepped forward, but remembering her furious command, he quickly retreated.
His eyes, however, never once left hers.
"And I never cheated on you. Chloe and I are completely platonic. The only reason I broke up with you back then was because I was backed into a corner. I have never laid a finger on her. She is my parents' adopted daughter. Her father was a famous calligrapher and my mother's teacher. They had a profound mentor-student bond, so when he passed away, my mother took Chloe in. To me, she's nothing more than a sister, barely a step above a stranger."
Sienna ruthlessly cut him off.
"Shut your mouth."
Her expression turned even colder, her eyes radiating pure disgust as if she were looking at absolute trash.
"You're just spewing all this to dodge responsibility. The only thing you're proving is what a spineless coward you are. You and Chloe are nothing? Then where the hell did your child come from? That little boy calls you Dad, and he idolizes you. If you weren't his father, why the hell would he call you that?"
