I Stopped Waiting and Started Loving novel Chapter 141

Bonnie immediately stood up and hurried out from behind the front desk.

Jillian's face was flushed and dripping with sweat, a few strands of graying hair plastered to her forehead. She looked so frantic she was on the verge of tears.

"Bonnie, I'm so worried about Parrish! I heard last night that he was in the emergency room. What exactly is going on?"

"And did you... did you really..."

Jillian stopped mid-sentence, her eyes darting nervously around the room.

Though it was nearly closing time, there were still plenty of doctors and nurses moving through the lobby.

Several pairs of eyes—curious, shocked, and even blatantly disgusted—were already locked onto them.

Jillian might have been a rural woman, but she understood the importance of appearances in the city.

She was terrified that speaking out of turn would ruin her daughter's reputation.

She swallowed the rest of her words, but her clouded eyes were desperate and completely bloodshot.

Bonnie felt a sharp, agonizing pinch in her chest.

She glanced at the wall clock. Ten minutes to closing.

"Caleb!" Bonnie called out to him across the room.

Caleb, who had been stretching his neck to watch the scene unfold, sprinted over instantly. "What's up, Bonnie?"

"Cover the desk for me. I have an emergency."

"Yeah, no problem. Go do what you gotta do, I've got this," Caleb promised, patting his chest.

"Thank you."

With no time to explain, Bonnie grabbed the heavy plastic bags from her mother, took her hand, and practically dragged her toward the elevators.

The moment they turned their backs, the lobby exploded into whispers.

"Oh my god, was that really Bonnie's mother?"

"I knew she didn't come from money, but I had no idea her family was that backwoods."

"Did you see her clothes? They were totally misshapen. And she was carrying two literal bags of weeds. If I didn't know better, I'd say she was here to beg for change."

"Seriously, how humiliating. If my mom showed up looking like some backwoods hick, I'd pretend I didn't know her."

"She always dresses so clean and acts so superior here. Turns out she's just trash masquerading as class."
