The next morning, Bonnie Hayes was jolted awake by a frantic ringtone.
She shifted slightly, only to realize she was still completely enveloped in a broad, warm embrace.
A large, well-defined hand rested heavily across her waist, its steady pressure making it hard to breathe.
Her sluggish brain instantly snapped awake, and she froze.
The memories of last night flooded her mind, and her face flushed crimson all the way down to her neck.
The ringtone continued its relentless assault.
Bonnie carefully inched away, following the sound until her hand found Quentin Vance's phone on the nightstand.
The screen flashed with the name "Jasper," and the time boldly read eight-ten in the morning.
Bonnie gasped, nearly springing right out of bed.
"Oh no, no, no..."
Pushing all other thoughts aside, she frantically shoved the man beside her and hissed.
"Quentin, get up! How did we sleep in this late? I'm going to be late for work, and you definitely are too!"
Quentin had actually woken up before six, but the girl in his arms was sleeping so soundly, pressed softly against his chest.
He rarely got to enjoy such a sense of peace, so he had kept his eyes closed and his breathing light.
Now that his arms were suddenly empty, Quentin frowned in displeasure and slowly opened his cold, dark eyes.
He pushed himself up, his dark hair slightly messy, the stray strands hiding the fleeting flash of disappointment in his gaze.
Watching Bonnie sprint toward the door like a startled rabbit, his lips pressed into a barely noticeable line.
He grabbed the vibrating phone and answered, his voice thick with sleep and the annoyance of being disturbed.
"Speak."
Meanwhile, Bonnie, who had just thrown open the bedroom door, froze dead in the center of the living room.
Jasper Ford, dressed in a sharp suit, was walking in while on his phone, and their eyes locked.
Jasper stopped dead in his tracks. Seeing Bonnie run out of the master bedroom in somewhat rumpled pajamas, his eyes widened and his jaw dropped.
Bonnie had never expected Jasper to be here this early in the morning.
"Uh... morning, Jasper..."
Bonnie was so mortified she wished the floor would swallow her whole.
Covering her face with one hand, she spun around and sprinted back into the bedroom like a gust of wind.
Jasper stood frozen, swallowed hard, and shakily brought his phone back to his ear.
"Director Vance, did you and Mrs. Vance... sleep together last night?"
On the other end, Quentin's voice was as cold as ice.
"Got a problem with that?"
