Chapter 104 Interview

About 30 minutes later, Phoebe’s phone rang.

She said, “The girl’s here for the interview. Want to meet her yourself?”

The last assistant she’d picked for Demi hadn’t worked out. Demi had transferred that one to another senior’s team for training.

Ten minutes later…

Inside the conference room…

Angel stood outside the door and knocked, nerves tightening her chest. This was her very first job interview.

“Come in.”

Demi heard the knock and responded without looking up, still flipping through the résumé in her hands.

Per Demi’s instructions, Phoebe had only brought in candidates from wealthy families.

Demi also noticed the girl was local.

“Hi.”

Angel opened the door and met her eyes.

Right away, she felt the woman’s presence. It was sharp and commanding.

“Hello. Take a seat.” Demi gave her a quick once-over. The girl wasn’t dressed like most applicants. Her look was polished and bold, clearly meant to stand out.

Then Demi saw the handbag on her shoulder. Limited edition Gucci. Probably a hundred grand at least.

That checked off her first box.

“You graduated from North City School of the Arts?”

It was already listed on the résumé, but Demi still asked the routine questions and skimmed through some of Angel’s old pieces.

Then she slid a sheet of paper and a pen across the table “You’ve got ten minutes. Sketch the window you think feels the most alive.”

“Okay.”

Angel picked up the pen. With a few confident strokes, clean lines took shape on the paper.

The pen made a soft, steady scratch across the page.

Demi could see it. The girl wasn’t guessing.

Her hand knew exactly what her mind wanted to show.

Eight minutes later, still under Demi’s gaze, Angel finished the sketch. It was simple, but the mood in it hit deep.

It was a hospital window. A bald child, no clear gender, at staring out. In the middle of their view stood a bare tree, branches empty, except for one tiny new sprout.

The sprout was easy to miss. It sat quietly on one branch, the most hidden part of the picture.

“Angel Porter.”

Demi’s lips curved slightly. A piece that could make someone feel something was already a success. She reached out her hand.

“Welcome to the team. I can’t wait to see what you’ll create.”

“I… I got the job?” It was her first interview. She hadn’t expected to walk out with an offer.

Angel stood up fast, her heart racing, and shook Demi’s hand.

“Yeah. Congrats.”

Demi kept her tone polite, her smile careful.

The exhibition deadline was closing in fast. She didn’t have time to waste sorting through piles of candidates.

Angel made the cut for two reasons. First, her background. Second, her raw talent.

Once the new hire was set, Demi rushed off to Snow Group.

The rest of the day slipped by in a blur. The sky grew darker. City lights flickered to life.

Carol and the others had told Demi to stop overworking, so she packed up her projects and brought them home.

Nevin stood outside Snow Group’s front doors, watching her car pull away. He didn’t trail behind this time like he usually did.

The court summons sat untouched on her passenger seat. He had come to ask her about it.

But once he stood there, nothing came. No words. And Demi probably wouldn’t have answered anyway.

Nevin headed back to the Blackwell Villa.

He unbuttoned his collar as he stepped into the bathroom.

The summons landed on the bed with a soft thud, forgotten.

Orion had heard his dad came home early, so he ran over to find him. He wanted to ask if Demi had finally cooled off. Maybe now he could go to Carol’s and see her.
