The next day…

Nevin called Demi again. Still no answer. He was planning a candlelight dinner that night to try and warm her up a little.

Joe stood nearby, going over the week’s schedule.

Nevin had pushed off nearly everything just to stay close to Demi.

But now, everything he’d delayed had piled up. And it was too much to stall any longer. A ton of it needed his attention right away.

Might as well knock all of it out now. Once it’s done, she’ll probably be over it. Then I can really sit down and apologize the right way.

He knew he’d ignored all the small things Demi had done for years.

All those little moments, all the effort she’d quietly put in behind the scenes. And they had all acted like they were owed that comfort. Like it just appeared.

He made up his mind and threw himself straight into work.

Rhea stepped in with a knock and a cup of coffee. When she saw Nevin back in full work mode, eyes locked on the screen like nobody else existed, she gave a faint smile.

See that, Demi? Even if you leave, Nevin might be upset for a while, but eventually, he’ll get used to you being gone.

She stared at his face in profile, the focus in his eyes, the sharp jaw, the silent intensity. She felt that love swelling inside her again. But she tucked it away.

She could wait.

Back at her desk, Rhea picked up a pretty pastry bag from the corner and headed to Joe’s office.

“Ms. Dunn? What’s going on?” Joe asked, confused.

Rhea always kept the male employees at arm’s length. A first, he thought Rhea just had a cold attitude toward men in general. But later, he figured it out..

She only kept her distance because of Mr. Blackwell.

“I grabbed some extra tarts from this bakery. Thought I bring you one,” Rhea said sweetly.

“I don’t really like sweets,” Joe replied, voice flat. He never cared for Rhea much. Once, he might’ve pitied her, but not anymore. Not after what she pulled on Demi. He glanced back at his screen. “If that’s all, Ms. Dunn, I’ve got stuff to get done.”

Rhea didn’t expect the rejection to hit that hard. Her smile cracked. Inside, she cursed him. Then she tried to steer the conversation. “So… you know anything about that court summons?”

Joe let out a silent, cold laugh. “I don’t know what you talking about Allan just a tip. Ms. Dunn. Stay in your lane. Mr. Blackwell’s private life has nothing to do with you. Do your commjrib

Rhea’s face twisted. That was a full-blown slap to the face.

You’ll see. First thing I’m doing once I’m at the top is firing your useless ass. And I’ll make damm sure you can’t land another job in this entire industry.

Joe had seen too many like her to be surprised. The moment she walked in, he could tell what she was trying to do.

Planning to get revenge on me later? Good luck with that.

Rhea stormed back to her office and slammed the door behind her. Her face twisted in anger as she kickert the bottom drawer shut.

She was the only woman left in Nevin’s life. And Joe still had the nerve to treat her like she was nobody?

Across town. Demi had started her morning at One Studio, where she and Angel sketched some concept drafts. By the afternoon, she was already back at Snow Group, fully immersed in work.
