She didn’t embellish. She just let her half-truth hang there long enough for him to connect the dots on his

Own.

That way, there was nothing to unravel later.

And everything she’d just said had come straight from Orion’s mouth. Even if Nevin went back and asked Demi about it, he’d assume it was her behavior that made Orion feel that way.

A flicker of frustration passed through Nevin’s eyes.

It wasn’t aimed at Rhea. It was all for Demi.

Still, he reminded himself of what Jenna had told him.

It could be the hormones. Pregnant women sometimes got possessive. If the baby inside felt insecure, the mother might start to emotionally pull away from her first child.

He believed it. And until the baby was born, he figured Orion would just have to hang in there.

“Ms. Dunn, I’m going to count on you to watch over Orion a bit more closely.”

It wasn’t like him to ask for help.

But aside from him and Demi, the one person Orion trusted most was Rhea.

She lit up inside. Her voice softened again, like she was still choked up. “It’s really no trouble. I care about Orion a lot. Even if it’s just for Demi’s sake, I’ll make sure he’s taken care of.”

Nevin gave a small nod. His eyes eased a little.

Then Rhea added, “Mr. Blackwell, would you be able to stop by for dinner with Orion tonight before coming back to work?”

Before he could answer, she jumped in again. “Demi… Well, Orion was already crying before he called me. He’s crushed. He really needs us there tonight.”

She didn’t forget to say “us.”

Nevin didn’t pick up on it. He gave a slight nod, which meant yes.

That night, once work ended, Rhea went home with Nevin to the Blackwell Villa.

Everyone else already thought they were a couple.

“Nevin, if Orion calms down, could you please not bring up Demi again? I’m worried he’ll start crying all over again.”

Just before Nevin reached the stairs, Rhea stepped in and stopped him. She looked worried, like she was afraid Orion might cry again and lose his appetite for dinner.

“I hear you.”

Nevin had been ready to ask, but after a quick thought, he decided to let it go until Orion was in a better mood.

Rhea smiled.

Nevin didn’t notice how many times she had practiced that exact smile in the mirror. He turned and went upstairs.

Rhea kept watching as he walked away. She wasn’t just stopping him from asking questions. She was planting a quiet little seed. The idea that Demi had been cold to her own son.

Upstairs…

When Nevin walked in, Orion was doing his homework. His lips were pursed, and his whole face looked

upset.

He spotted Nevin and brightened for a second.

“Dad, you’re back.”

Nevin felt guilt sink into his chest.

Since Demi left, work had swallowed him whole. He hadn’t made it back for dinner in a while. Most nights, Orion was already asleep when he came home.
